I went to Andy Young's 75 birthday celebration on Sunday and everyone was there from President Clinton to Ludacris. I found it refreshing at the end when Andy Young praised Hip Hop. To loosely paraphrase him, he said, "It's a great thing that these young people have found a way to make money out of poverty, struggle and pain. The hip hop industry has contributed over 1 Billion to the economy of Atlanta. Yes I don't agree with everything they rap about but my mother also didn't like when I sang songs with lyrics such as 'show me your black panties."

Ruby said the steakhouse was crowded with diners who gave him a standing ovation for telling Simpson and his party of 12 to leave. "By the morning I had emails from across the country commending me for the convictions I had for doing the right thing," Ruby said.

Akon Axed by Verizon Over "Simulated Rape".

Rapper Akon has been fired by Verizon -- and is being threatened with prosecution -- after he reportedly simulated a "rape" of a 15-year-old on stage during a concert in Trinidad a few weeks ago.

Verizon promoted Akon as one of the musicians on its mobile-phone music service, and said it would no longer sponsor the Gwen Stefani tour in which Akon, who recently performed on "American Idol," is the opening act.

Besides the fact that Akon is a SINGER and not a RAPPER, notice how rappers have become the poster children for socially unacceptable behavior in Ameirca. In an era of Slasher movies, TV Shows about whores (Desperate Housewives) and pornographic magazines featuring dead women (Anna Nicole Smith in Playboy) the disproportionate coverage and reporting of the exploits of "rappers" is conspicuous. Turns out the girl in question was not even supposed to be in the club which was for 21 and over.

Anyway, since when have singers, rockers or rappers not been sexually extroverted performers? Failure to do so would mean doom to most careers. (There female fans wouldn't stand for it.)

Jones is calling for an independent, international scientific investigation “guided not by politicized notions and constraints but rather by observations and calculations.”

In debunking the official explanation of the collapse of the three WTC buildings, Jones cites the complete, rapid, and symmetrical collapse of the buildings; the horizontal explosions (squibs) evidenced in films of the collapses; the fact that the antenna dropped first in the North Tower, suggesting the use of explosives in the core columns; and the large pools of molten metal observed in the basement areas of both towers.

Jones also investigated the collapse of WTC 7, a forty-seven-story building that was not hit by planes, yet dropped in its own “footprint,” in the same manner as a controlled demolition. Nearly as entertaining as the anticipated fight, HBO's unprecedented pre-fight coverage "De La Hoya Mayweather 24/7" is part documentary part Reality TV. Not only does it take the viewer inside the training camp of these fighters, it takes you into their homes.

Naturally HBO wants to sell as many of the $50+ PPV packages as possible therefor pandering to the American need for Good Guy vs Bad Guy is the obvious formula. What is interesting is the producer Ross Greenberg's idea of what a good guy is and what a bad guy is.

Bad Guy - Rich, Black and Hip Hop

Coverage of Mayweather invariably focuses on his ostentatious persona, his flamboyant lifestyle, and gratuitous displays of wealth. (One scene showed Mayweather getting a haircut in his 2,500 sq. ft. bathroom. ) Mayweather's commentary seems limited to "motherfucker this, motherfucker that and I'm going to whup his ass). The background music is hard core rap mixed with James Brown's "The Big Payback".

In contrast De La Hoya is portrayed as the determined good guy who shadow boxes with his son, trains under the thoughtful eye of his trainer who heroically battles Parkinson's and frets over his wife's birthday celebration. The background music is gentle and easy listening.

While Floyd kicks it with the ultimate Hip Hop icon 50 Cent, De La Hoya calls his friend Michael Jay Fox to invite him to the fight.

What's interesting is what Ross Greenberg ... went out of his way not to tell us about Mayweather.

Away from the public eye, Mayweather Jr. is a doting father to his son and two daughters, a caring son to his mother, a conscientious brother to his sisters and a loyal friend to those close to him.

"When I was about 8 or 9, I lived in New Jersey with my mother and we were seven deep in one bedroom and sometimes we didn't have electricity," Mayweather says. "When people see what I have now, they have no idea of where I came from and how I didn't have anything growing up."

Mayweather was born in Grand Rapids, Mich., into a family of boxers. His father and uncles, Jeff and Roger, were professional boxers. Floyd Sr., who lost to Leonard in 1978, never fought for a world title.

Floyd Sr. also had a side job - selling drugs. That job made him a mean taskmaster at home. His punishment of little Floyd was often harsh and brutal, according to Mayweather Jr. He says that when he was a baby, his father used him as a shield to keep his brother-in-law from shooting him.

Yet, the public is not treated to the American success story that is Floyd Mayweather. We are not spoon fed anecdotes about his amazing work ethic or self-motivation. Mayweather is displayed as an asshole freak of nature whose speed was just handed him by the luck of genetics. The fact is there are nearly a million young Floyd Mayweathers languishing in For Profit prisons all over America. Men not fortunate enough to have survived the perils of urban America or the Katrina like destruction of the black family. Nah, that story is not told. Just entourages, cars, curse words and indulgence.

This fight is being intentionally billed as White Reasonable Establishment vs Rich Niggardly Hip Hop.

LOS ANGELES - Former "Spice Girl" Melanie Brown has lashed out at film star and former boyfriend Eddie Murphy, insisting the veteran funnyman is the father of her one-month-old daughter.

In an interview to be broadcast by the syndicated entertainment news show "Extra," Brown said she was baffled by her split with Murphy last year and his subsequent refusal to acknowledge paternity of the child, Angel Iris.

"I don't know what happened and I still don't know what happened," Brown said in excerpts on the interview released by "Extra" on Wednesday.

"We had a few little disagreements and things that we were working though, but I didn't think for one second it was completely over -- my main thing now is I want him to be a responsible parent."

Brown, better known as "Scary Spice" during the British girl band's heyday, revealed she had planned her pregnancy with Murphy, the star of "Dreamgirls," "Beverly Hills Cop" and "Shrek."

"This baby was planned and he knows it's his -- this is what's mind-boggling," the 31-year-old singer said.

Murphy told an interviewer last year that he and Brown had split up and that he wasn't sure who the father of her child was, indicating that a paternity test would be the only way to be sure.

However Brown said Murphy had refused a paternity test.

"She (Angel Iris) can't speak, she can't defend herself, and I've got a situation where I'm dealing with a father who won't do a DNA test, who won't sign the birth certificate, she added.

"So, now I have to go through lawyers and I think it's really sad."

In this article, Steven Warshawsky critiques John McWhorter's latest esssay on black consciousness and what McWhorter calls "anti-authoritarianism." Warshawsky argues that racial conciousness among blacks limits our ability to succeed in a "white society."

I'm sorry, but did he pose for this picture? Did he place the camera on a tripod, set the timer and bend all down low to look up into the lens like he was going to propose to his same-sex partner?

Is it me? That manufactured sincerity, that watery eyed look of compassion. I think this hints to the core of the problem with black America.

Strong, capable, self-determining black Men have been systematically eliminated or discredited for a number of decades. Black men who actually built schools and businesses and sought political and economic autonomy were set upon by the FBI and other agencies tasked to stifle real development in our community.

Leaving a cadre of black puppet leaders / and acceptable intellectuals, refugees from the War To Integrate (Big Ups Brother Fisher) to lead black people down the road to marginalization and conformity.

No serious black leader or intellectual would promote the notion that we live in a "white society". Society is no more "white" than we agree it is.

There were 2,000 whites in Charleston S.C. and 9,000 black slaves for decades before Denmark Vesey organized his rebellion. His biggest problem? Plantation Negros who argued the rebellion couldn't work because they lived in a "white society".

Black ... men ... like McWhorter suggesting we forfeit our "racial consciousness" are the same men who fought against Vesey's rebellion by arguing: "We Slaves Aint We".

Considering America a "white society" is conceptually self-defeating.

McWhorter, Crouch, even Oprah are functionaries of the power elite tasked to maintain the status quo by leading black people along a road of capitulation, conformity and acquiescence.

In this era of group politics black people should imitate the successful tactics of the most powerful group - Jews. Are they forfeiting their racial consciousness?

DUKE STUDENTS CAUGHT CHEATING - May Be A National Trend

Is a graduate degree evidence that one is a smarter more hard working student or does it merely suggest that one is a more cunning resourceful practitioner of situational ethics?

Duke University is trying to deal with a cheating scandal involving 34 first-year business graduate students in an era when national surveys have suggested that cheating is widespread among their peers.

In a survey released last September by a Rutgers University professor, 56 percent of business graduate students admitted having cheated, compared with 54 percent in engineering, 48 percent in education and 45 percent in law school. More than 5,300 students at 54 universities were surveyed from 2002 to 2004.

"This is self-reported evidence of cheating, so it's probably underestimated," said Donald McCabe, the professor who oversaw the survey. "I would say at many business schools it is a part of the culture. You want to talk rationalizations? I could give you thousands of them: 'Everybody else does it; it's the teachers' fault; you have to do it to get ahead.' "

The 34 at Duke face steep penalties after university officials determined they collaborated on answers of an exam. Mike Hemmerich, an associate dean at Duke's Fuqua School of Business, said a professor noticed unusual consistencies in the answers of a take-home exam, which the students seeking a master's degree in business administration were supposed to do on their own.

School officials declined to identify the course, the professor or the students.

Very little criticism has been done examining the work produced by Jean-Michel Basquiat. While his place in the history of American art is still under dispute, it cannot be denied that during the eight years that he painted, his much of his work examines the legacy of the colonial enterprise and his relationship to that legacy. Whether recasting the work of European masters like Leonardo Davinci in his own terms or recounting events from Haitian, Puerto Rican, African and African American history, Basquiat presented a vision of a fragmented self in search of an organizing principle. Now, ten years after his death, critics can revisit his work apart from the taint of the market-driven art boom of the 1980s. Perhaps some of the tools developed in the field of postcolonial studies will help to unlock some of the mysteries contained in the work of this fascinating and complex artist.
