If you want an exit row for leg room, select a regular seat online then ask to be moved to an exit row when you check in with the clerk. Otherwise they'll hit you for $25+ as even the exit row is a "premium" now.
KP
Wow. Things are rough.
From the perspective of the airlines, I understand this. Rising fuel costs (how much must it cost to fill a plane?), slow economy, air travel down. Weren't there recently a couple of airlines who just closed up shop one day? People purchased their tickets, showed up for their flights and the airline was just gone. No planes, no employees, no scheduled flights, nothing.
I fly Southwest. I'd rather forego a meal, and an assigned seat than to pay for a pillow or to check a bag.
It works better for me because Southwest allows passengers to check in online 24 hours prior to departure. Get to the airport. Go straight to your gate. I like that.

Good stuff KP.
I agree with the Prince. Southwest model makes more sense.
But other than that. Fug it. I aint flying other than when absolutely necessary.
Entering and exiting an airport is like entering and exiting a federal prison.
You forfeit a degree of your sovereignty.
The numbers of people who routinely take their shoes and belts off - WHEN EVERYBODY KNOWS GOOD AND GOTDAMN WELL ... Grandma Etta Mae Tucker ... IS NO AL QAEDA TERRORIST - is evidence of the mass conditioning of the American people. It is preparation for the increasingly totalitarian police state to come.
100's of millions of American citizens are funneled through largely unnecessary airline security measures each year, like rats through a maze, serves to condition Americans to unwarranted searches and seizures and a government that uses "security" as an excuse to seize power.
Continental is the bomb. Flush with Haliburton and KBR $$$$ servicing those international junkets to and from the middle east and hubbed out of Bush airport in Houston.
They still running things old school like it was still 1968. They had me delayed for about an hour in Louisiana, (no problem whatsoever for me) and issued everybody a $10 meal voucher to use at the Houston airport.
Check bags, pillows, blankets, seat selection, everything, no extra charge.....,
