A study found that mothers can pass the legacy of an unhealthy diet onto their daughters and granddaughters, raising their odds of breast cancer.
The research, presented at the American Association for Cancer Research's annual conference, is one of several to show that conditions in the womb can affect health for generations.
With breast cancer already claiming more than 1,000 lives a month alone, the finding underlines the importance of eating well in pregnancy.
To look at the effect of diet on the female line, the scientists fed some pregnant rats normally and gave others the same amount of calories but in a much fattier form.
They then looked at breast cancer rates in the animal's daughter and granddaughters, both of which were fed normally.
Despite this second and third generation not gorging on fatty food, they were up to 60 per cent more likely to develop breast tumours than other rodents.
The researchers, from Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center in Washington DC, then tried to work out how something that happened in pregnancy can go on to affect the health for generations to come.
They showed that it wasn't due to the junk food diet raising levels of oestrogen, a hormone that fuels the growth of breast tumours.
Instead, they believe it can be explained by a process called epigenetics, in which conditions in the womb cause subtle changes to the way genes work.
These changes, which are different to mutations, can be passed down the line from mother to daughter, or from father to son, time and time again.

I make everything from scratch and my children have both learned from me how to cook just about anything from scratch for just about any number of people. I learned from my mother who learned from her mother - and even got in on the crazy mad skillz of my paternal grandmother and aunts who were up on thangs my master chef matrilineage didn't know anything about - like canning and pickling and curing.
There is a WORLD of difference between what comes into my larder and gets prepared in my kitchen or on my smoker or grill - and what gets trucked into a McDonalds and stacked on pallets in its walk-in freezer and walk-in refrigerator.
