To answer your question DMG, prions are interesting because so much is NOT known about them.
Just like viruses,microbiologists and biochemists still debate how to classify them as 'living' or not. Sure they can be seen as protein strands, but by mechnanisms still poorly understood they can induce conformational changes in other proteins. My curiosity has to do with this 'induction/communication mechanism'. The article you cited was recent and tried to tackle the question by using KNOWN processes to induce conformational changes in proteins to see if they had the same affect on prions. Thanks for the link.
Clearly this area of research that involves microorganism communication is new and necessary. I've read that a newer generation of antibiotics might work by inhibiting the ability of the organisms to 'communicate' with one another.
Understanding mechanisms by which these organisms communicate, organize, consume energy and propagate is important and a major area of interest for me, and apparently many others:)

I suppose it depends on how you define communication. Cell to cell signaling could be considered communication. But that's an interesting approach to PrP's.
