The former president of Switzerland apologized under heavy pressure today for labeling as "ransom and blackmail" demands from Jewish groups that Swiss banks compensate Holocaust victims for vanished wartime deposits.
Economics Minister Jean-Pascal Delamuraz, who held Switzerland's rotating presidency until the end of 1996, said in a letter to World Jewish Congress President Edgar M. Bronfman that he was "sorry I offended your feelings as well as those of many other people concerned, particularly those of the Jewish community at large."
