Wide sections of the Southeast, have the nation's highest rates of obesity and diabetes. In many counties in those regions, rates of diagnosed diabetes exceed 10 percent and obesity prevalence is more than 30 percent.
Eighty-one percent of counties in the Appalachian region that includes Kentucky, Tennessee, and West Virginia have high rates of diabetes and obesity. So do three-quarters of counties in the southern region that includes Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Carolina.

Does anyone watch the new show on TLC, Big Happy Family? It's a black family all of whom are over 300 lbs. They are the most unhealthy family ever but also the most loving family I have ever seen. I would love your take on it because a lot of ppl think they're stereotypical (the look like the Klumps from the Nutty Professor) but I like it.
Hey Pink!
I have heard of the show but have not seen it. Not sure how I feel about it. You say they are loving? How so? What does that love look like?
Hey Nurse! The parents are really loving in the way that they communicate with each other and their children. The father is sooo sweet toward the mother. His one regret is that she asked him to marry her rather than vice versa and it's something that he's ashamed of so he bought her a new engagement ring and wrote something about how much he loves her. The kids are 14 and 16 and they get along so well. It sounds like basic stuff, like the way a family should be but I mean these people are like the Huxtables (plus about 250 lbs) and it's really sweet for a child of divorce like myself to see. I literally know NO families that interact the way they do.
Um.
I don't know Pink...
Being 250lbs. overweight is as dysfunctional as being a crack addict.
I mean, imagine a family sitting around hitting the pipe all day ... while be really really sweet with each other.
The way these people live will kill 100 times more black people than cocaine ever did.
These people talk about vegetables like they are as foreign to them as are unicorns.
This shit is PROBLEM #1 in Black America.
They aren't bad people. But they need an intervention. Not a TV Show.
Pink,
While I commend them for demonstrating love for each other I have to agree with DV on the whole "crackhead" equivelent...
Obesity used to be an issue that few of us had to contend with. I remember seeing a really fat lady at the grocery store when I was a little girl and I COULD NOT STOP STARING AT HER! She was so large, and stood out against the rest of the folk...now...she would blend right in.
Loving and caring for our families must equate to more than poems, love letters and hugs. We must care for our loved ones by choosing life..by purchasing and preparing meals to live not LIVING TO EAT.
As parents we must learn to say no to our children. "no, u cannot have mcdonalds. no u cannot have that candy. no, u cannot eat another serving of dinner just because it tastes good"....as responsible mates and lovers we must also encouraged our spouses to do the same...ain't nothing loving or sexy about a fat ass.
just saying...
DV is 100% correct about the obesity issue, and it's negative effects on the Black community. And 100% ignorant about the hows and why's of it all.
Isn't it odd that we can complain about rampant poverty in our communities, while at the same time bemoaning the rampant obesity in the same exact communities? Talk about something that has to be by design. But then Bro. DV agrees that it's by design. Of course he does, he said so. I guess Black folks and poor folks engineered the situation themselves, just like they continue to victimize themselves with the GSWS 2.0
@ Pink, it's not showing love to someone to condone or contribute to their unhealthy attitudes and activities. Most of us no longer even have the excuse of not knowing any better.
Theez black cats fat
Cuz indulgence is free
Paid by white guilt
For an invisible fee...
DV got it half right
But misses radical autonomy
Love built on destruction
Is the subtle instruction
'Bout this show on tv...
These fatties ain't livin' in oppression...
that's the EXODUS mentality
instead, they abusin' they freedom
through radical autonomy!!!
get fatter by the day
cuz the EXODUS mentality
change they reality
got'm thinkin' all that eatin'
is the work of the enemy!!!
but that's EXODUS mentality
just practicin' his radical autonomy...
Watch theez nigels...
Claim the options are limited
Fat black cats had to eat 6000 calories
Cuz 3000 would be diminutive...
Half of what I had before
Would be primitive...
Limiting my option to die
Would make me have to live...
thordaddy is school and church.
thordummy needs school and church.
Learned one new phrase
using it for all he's worth.
thinks lame ass rhymes give his shit panach
Like putting frosting on garbage and calling it desert
One track mind
over 8 track lyrics,
outdated, overrated,
devoid of spirit
radical autonomy
is your screed
same time life, liberty
and pursuit of happiness
is your creed.
the zero sum game
is your need
cause it's the only thing
make you seem up to speed
you couldn't understand the exodus
if I took you on this trip
can't free your mind
ain't got the time
you genetically ain't equipped.
recessive trait
causin all your hate,
don't matter what you do
soon enough it's done
the EXODUS already been and gone
the wheel turns
the sun burns
the many will be the ONE
excuse me, but what did thordaddy say that was not the truth? i am not a rapper, but i can read..
Look at the EXODUS mentality...
Tryin' tuh 'splain his diabolical exit strategy...
Need uh TD
Just tuh create uh new reality...
Dood still slavin'
Like his great great grandpappy
Think I owe'm sumptin' tuhday
Afterall, that's what the homey's say
And that's what the homos say
Butt that's an EXODUS mentality
The mentality of the slave...
The show is very interesting. The producers walk the line of exploitation and education by finding a very nice family who is ignorant as all hell and exposing their struggle for health to the world. They are an extreme case, but not too far from many folks I know in the midwest.
Yes, yes "plantation food" etc, etc. Do you all REALLY think this family became MORBIDLY obese by eating normal size portions? You eat enough of anything, in portions too large without increasing your activity your ass will be just as fat.
36 yo woman 380
41 yo man 340
16 yo girl 350
14 yo boy 308
Entire family wearing C-cup and above bras.
Fork to mouth. Nothing more.
On keeping the non-negotiable way of life, which is the unsustainable thing, there is no discussion or consideration given to the moral imperative of socializing and sharing things (Christ-like) vs. the intractably deeply rooted individual hyper-consumption pattern in American culture and the dopaminergic meme that this culture has exported and infected nearly all the rest of humanity with. Not a single thought or comment has ever been given hereabouts to what my man the iconoclastic umbrarchist has called for for decades - trying to find a way out of the disposable, programmed obsolescence "economy". Brahman been pushing for economic literacy for decades and on that basis, a sustainable living network without the American sprawl's impossibly wasteful distances as barriers to the performance of fundamental survival tasks like getting to nutritious food - without having to drive for miles and miles and waste huge amounts of oil.
Notice Beelzebub steady pretending to be concerned about Black folk's nutrition, but he didn't make even the faintest peep when presented with a mountain of data concerning why it's challenging for po Black folks to get at nutritious food in places like Chicago where Bro. Umbra been carrying on the real, material, educational, and practical struggle in this space for decades.
CNu,
The food desert thing is definitely something that wouldn't occur to people who live in areas that have easy access to plenty of good and healthy groceries. It certainly was a reality check for me.
I have been poor before but that never prevented me from eating healthy because the notion that eating healthy is expensive is a bunch of B.S. But the lack of access to a nearby supermarket is something I never had to deal with. Maybe I did and I just didn't see it that way and always found a way to get what I needed.
So.... it's true environment can be a contributing factor to obesity but what these folks need more than anything else is a mentality shift IMO. Without that, it won't matter what you give them easy access to, they will go for what they have always gone for regardless.
"I have been poor before but that never prevented me from eating healthy because the notion that eating healthy is expensive is a bunch of B.S." NEA
Intellectually courageous.

That's not just an opinion you asserted NEA, that's straight up truth - which bears repeating!
Now,
Apply that same rationale to our overarching "way of life", i.e., the suburban sprawl - greatest misallocation of material resources in human history - and you find yourself looking squarely at the root cause of phenomena like food deserts.
Are you familiar with the root causes of American suburban sprawl and with the origins of the term "tipping point"?
As that term has entered into common usage, it's become far more innocuous than it was when its author originally coined it during my lifetime.
Something to consider when our host, my cloven-hoofed and fork-tongued friend LaRooshifer, bends over backwards as he very often does to pretend that slavery, lynchings in the south, and other manifestations of overt dixiecratic racism were the only engineered manifestations of racism exerting consequential systemic effects on the lives of Black folks.
Note that report was prepared by the state of Illinois which means that there are lots of policy, program, law and law enforcement folk - in positions of authority - with full knowledge of the long term and widespread effects of their operational decisions on the lives of poor Black folk.
Peep game in any other large American metropolitan sprawl and you'll find the same ubiquitous patterns, washed, rinsed, and repeated, over and over again.
What these folks need more than anything else is a mentality shift right?
How likely you think it is that any such mentality shift is close at hand?
The Great CNu,
"Are you familiar with the root causes of American suburban sprawl and with the origins of the term "tipping point"?"
Economic inequality? And the situation is getting out of hand. But that is the essence of a capitalist society. Ain't it?
"What these folks need more than anything else is a mentality shift right? How likely you think it is that any such mentality shift is close at hand?"
Evidently, not likely anytime soon.
But I thought that is what DV attempts to do in the way that he can, with his GSBS crusade.
Nah, DeVil pushing for the status quo harder than just about anybody else I know.
^^ LOL. Come on LeVarrrr.
You are drifting towards the level of knee-jerk, lip-poked-out jealousy of Mike Fisher.
What's "status quo" about organic vegetarian food for black people?
What's "status quo" about Sunshine & 5,000 IUs of Vitamin D instead of H1N1 vaccines?
What's "status quo" about GetAChick?
What's "status quo" about "1 Million Brothas For 1 Million Broads"?
What's "status quo" about the Oral Polio Vaccine's connection to AIDS?
What's "status quo" about the Africa origins of Christianity?
What's "status quo" about the 'Save Darfur' is a hoax?
What's "status quo" about CO2 Global Warming Hoax?
What's "status quo" about GMO as a Eugenics tool?
What's "status quo" about National Health Care Hoax?
GET.THE.FUCK.OUT.OF.HERE.
You are turning out to be a nerd who will say anything when frustrated.
So...what's your plan on feeding 6.5 Billion (and growing) people with Organic-only produce? (I suppose this would be possible if the yield of excrement that comes out of your mouth could be harnessed for the amount of extra fertilizer necessary for such an endeavor...)
Organic/non-organic, whatever. A well balanced healthy diet, limiting fat and increasing fruit and vegetable intake in conjunction with increased aerobic activity is by now obvious. Telling folks they NEED to eat organic and only from Whole Foods (or whatever your choice store may be) is counterproductive, not going to happen, and will likely just be an excuse to continue cooking with lard.
Why do people gravitate toward fatty foods? One, fat tastes good. We evolved to seek it out because it provides more stored energy per cubic centimeter than protein or carbohydrate. In the land where sitting on your ass in front of a computer with the ability order anything from porn and pizza to a cars and furniture...this adaption has not served us well in the modern world.
You want to get people to eat healthier? Make a healthy diet less expensive, and show people that it can be easy to prepare, and tastes good, and forget the requirement that it MUST be organic or from a certain store to be "healthy". Stop with the "magical" healing power bullshit. Tell folks the truth, that losing weight entails getting their fat asses off the couch, and does not require an expensive gym membership or certain pills. I told my mom and dad to go out, hold hands and make a 30-40 minute after dinner brisk stroll part of their daily plan. Both lost weight, and felt better. Dad still walks...mom spends too much time perseverating over buying from a certain store..
I will agree that Daddy Fat in the video being amazed that spinach is available sans-can is ridiculous. However, compare the prices of Organic vs "non" organic produce. Seems Organic spinach is pretty damn expensive (click on one product/all markets).
Could someone please provide a reputable source that proves organic food is somehow "healthier", and why? Until you can that line is nothing but talk.
You are drifting towards the level of knee-jerk, lip-poked-out jealousy of Mike Fisher.
What's "status quo" about organic vegetarian food for black people?
Beelzebub...,
Would it actually hurt you to put down the LaRooshian chindribble long enough to promote and support some Black partisan, people-centric endeavors geared toward accomplishing the objectives you pretend so hard to support?
All the rest of that is just so much unfocused disinformation and speculative gas.
You are turning out to be a nerd who will say anything when frustrated.
lol,
denmarkvesey.net is an entertainment site, along the lines of uvtblog or bossip.
nothing serious ever has or ever will arise from the itsy bitsy noirish corner of LaRoosh's multi-million dollar alternative media celebrity hustle.

That's sweet :)... Yea it really doesn't take much ppl.
