To achieve high vaccination rates (97%), the government implemented nationwide vaccine initiatives, which included offering federal grants to states and encouraging strict enforcement (state mandates for forced vaccination).
During this time period, the number of mandated vaccines gradually increased (from 8 in 1980 to 22 in 2000) as vaccination became a requirement for a much younger population (the majority of all 30 childhood vaccines are administered before the age of 18 months). Only after these developments did autism cross class lines. Today autism is widespread in all socioeconomic groups.

While I'm not denying the link between autism and vaccines; autism is also has genetic roots. Another thing worth remembering is that its not just about the availability of vaccines but the class dynamics operant in the diagnosis of autism. It was previously considered a White middle class disease and that class bias is evident in early research.
There is little historical data on the rates of autism sufferers or ones susceptible to the didsease in working class and non-White families. It's the same with dyslexia, it was thought of as only afflicting White middle-class kids and the less educated or illiterate parents of poor dyslexic kids didn't pick up on it because of their educational background. Same thing with anorexia being a middle class White girl's disease.
A study called Social Class in Autism done in the UK shows there is no significant association between social class factors and autism only research bias.

Ha, DV did you catch that bit on Saturday Night Live where on the Weekend Update they mentioned that the Goldman Sachs bankers who royally fucked the economy were supposed to be getting swine flu shots ahead of everybody else. The implication being "Oooh, can you believe it, the same fat cats who destroyed your economy are getting their swine flu shots before you." And I saw in a local paper there was a cartoon that pokes fun of the fact that guantanamo bay detainees are getting their swine flu shots ahead of regular Americans too.
