In terms of the future of international trade; it lies in these emerging markets. They're a strong enough threat to the EU economically but not politically. By 2050 they're expected to dominate the world markets. With their economies growing in '08/'09 whereas EU-USA have contracted and things are beginning to shift.
The stage has already been set with Brazil as the EU's biggest trading partner in this group and America, China. While Prez O is busy playing the hypocrisy game over Iran's missiles calling for sanctions trying to co-opt Russia; China is acting purely on economic interest with over $50 billion in oil deals struck with Iran in the last four months.
I think the Games going to Rio are symbolic of the shift, apart from of course the plain obvious fact that Rio was the best choice.

...Of course Rush Limbaugh & friends will try to pin this loss on recent events in Chi-town but at some point their tiresome hysterics become inaudible; I tune out to the wailings of madmen. Wasn't anyone else *relieved* that Chicago's bid failed? Chicago needs a massive security risk, another stack of debt, and yet another matter to require the President's personal attention like it needs, well, the Olympics.
It makes more sense for the Olympic infrastructure to be built in an expanding, up-and-coming country like Brazil that is not quite there yet, rather than an established country anyways.
