A New York jury has concluded that pharmaceutical company Lederle Laboratories was responsible for the injury to a man who contracted polio from a vaccine 30 years ago, and ordered it to pay him $22.5 million.Dominick Tenuto became infected with polio in 1979, shortly after his daughter received a vaccine made by Lederle from a live polio virus. Tenuto alleged that he had been exposed to the live virus while changing his daughter's diaper.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a total of 144 people in the United States became infected with polio from live vaccines between 1980 and 1998. While the majority of these were the vaccine recipients themselves, the number includes 51 who contracted the disease upon contact with a vaccinated individual.
Nigeria is fighting an unusual outbreak of polio caused by a mutating polio vaccine, world health authorities say, but the only remedy is to keep vaccinating children there.
Officials of the World Health Organization fear that news of the outbreak, which began last year, will be a new setback for eradication efforts in northern Nigeria. Vaccinations were halted there in 2003 for nearly a year because of rumors that they sterilized Muslim girls or contained the virus that causes AIDS. During that lull, polio spread to many countries, although most have eliminated the small outbreaks that resulted.
Officials have denied suggestions that they kept the outbreak a secret, and said that they had not realized until recently that as many as 70 of Nigeria's last 1,300 polio cases stemmed from a mutant vaccine virus rather than from a "wild type" virus, which causes most polio.

300,000,000 doses 144 cases (51 contact cases). And all three of his daughters (including the one whose diapers he was changing) and former wife are walking around upright.
What kind of monkey's did you say they were culturing this OPV in? And are they still doing it?

The oral polio vaccine couldn't be screened for SIV until the mid 80's right?
So how can you know how many millions of people were infected between the 1950's and the 1980's?

144 cases are people who contracted POLIO, not SV40 or SIV.
