When Felicia shows some range, playing a college professor or a house mom from the deep south, i'll raise my eyebrows.
Jamie Hector (cat that played Marlo Stanfield) on the other hand is an acting beast!
Also bruh, I saw Slumdog and it was good but the multiple wins smell alot like Hollywood attempts to access the undeniable numbers in the Bollywood market moreso than anything else.

Why must black artists first prove they can be something other before given props for who they are?
Fact is there are millions of people with "native tongues and organic ties to the Baltimore streets", who couldn't come close to the physical expressiveness, emotional availability, imagination, observation and emulation Felicia Pearson brought to her role as Snoop in The Wire.

Jamie Hector is a beast. Possibly the best actor since a young Brando electrified Broadway as Stanley Kowalksi in A Street Car Named Desire. The worst thing for his career would be to start playing monoculture plantation roles in monoculture plantation films and monoculture plantation TV shows like CSI.
Keanon, I don't know how long you've been reading the blog, but this is what is meant by "Plantation Negro". One who perceives the plantation (corporation / media / institution / government / etc.) to be far more powerful than it actually is, and thus seeks it's sanction in nearly every qualitative consideration.

Real talk. Tell me the ratings wouldn't be through the roof.

Technically she'd be up for an Emmy not an Oscar and 2nd, I don't see the role as something outside of her comfort zone. In the case of snoop I'd give dap to the casting director for selecting actors with native tongues and organic ties to the Baltimore streets.

Good points Keanon, she represents a growing population in this community, we dont have anything except butch dykes in southwest h-town. Id like to see her just play a girl who likes boys, I bet she cant.
I feel you Keanon, but that was a hellavu scene though. Don't act like you didn't recognize it the second you saw it.
I haven't seem Slumdog. But I certainly don't like years where one movie dominates.
DV...
"Must you see Oscar winner Kate Winslet play a lesbian Baltimore drug dealer before you credit her with range?
Why must black artists first prove they can be something other before given props for who they are?"
Give yourself the Astute DV Award Of the Month.
