Why is Shaquanda Cotton In Prison?

I bet being named "Shaquanda" had something to do with it.

Shaquanda Cotton, 15, of Paris Texas, is entering the second year of a 7-year prison term for pushing a hall monitor at her high school 2005. Reportedly, there were no serious injuries in the incident and this was her first arrest. Cotton is black. The same judge had recently sentenced a white teenager to probation for arson.

How much time would Rachel Rosenbaum get for pushing her TA?

Denmark Vesey ...
Forgive me D and J, but I don't buy into the mom being a "prominent civil rights" activist (whatever that means today).

Where I am from it takes more than throwing the charge of racism around to earn the title of political prisoner.

The heart of the matter: What in the hell is a 14 year old girl doing shoving teachers? That tells me more about her mother than anything else.

A Prison sentence is ridiculous, but let's be honest here - some of these kids have gotten out of hand.

Nah Jasai, apparently her mother is a prominent civil rights activist. Suspicion has it that the sentence was so rough on the daughter to get back at the mother.

LOL. Big J, I'm surprised you are not trying to get Shaquanda a summary admission into UCLA because she has had her "sanity assaulted since birth".

The sentence was harsh, no doubt about that.

But I’m more concerned about the girl’s lack of respect for authority because shoving a teacher signifies a serious problem. I'm sure we all wanted to do it, but didn't. So, what's going on at home and in life that a 14-year old felt justified in physically assaulting an adult authority figure? A precursor for the rest of her life, maybe? These are the kids we see everyday and talk about being the lost ones.

She didn't shove a teacher, she shoved a hall monitor. No injuries, not sure why she did it, but that's ridiculous. They could have had her switch schools, go to anger management, whatever. But prison time for that shit is ridiculous.

And her mom isn't an "activist", as I had heard. Apparently, she pissed off the school district with 12 separate claims of racism.
