Constructing a legal framework in order to fit the unconstitutional reality of detaining people deemed a threat to the security of the state is not new. While communist dictatorships just imprisoned and shot folks without such a legal framework, the Germans, being very legalistically-mined people, did actually construct such a judicial framework in 1934 in response to their version of 911, namely the arson of the German Reichstag, the Parliament. The framework they came up with was the "Volksgerichtshof", the "people's Court".

The rationale President Obama presents here is exactly the same as that which was presented by the German government at the time. A government which was run by the National Socialist Worker's Party, aka the Nazi Party.

In our subsequent email correspondence, I learned something about the complicated nature of genomic research.

I also learned that Dr. Terwilliger does NOT suppose that "intelligence" -- however that trait is defined -- is equally distributed across all human populations.

Interesting. But I, for one, am not interested in trying to predict anything about "an individual" based on his group membership.

If, however, "group differences always exist," then why should anyone expect that blacks, whites and Asians would -- collectively, on average -- perform identically the same on IQ tests or SATs or by any other cognitive measure?

Yet the liberal egalitarianist looks at group differences in test scores as evidence that the test is biased... or that there's something wrong with the schools... or that the whole society is somehow racist.

I simply dare to ask whether those group differences in cognitive test scores might reflect a state of nature.

DNA sequencing might answer this question. Or it might not.

Either way, there's no scientific basis to back up the liberal egalitarianist position that no group differences exist.

GMO means genetically modified organism.

CF DV is referring to foods that have had genes inserted into them from other species. EG inserting a cold water fish gene into tomatoes to make them withstand cold weather better. While in principle this seems like a good idea, proteins are showing up in these foods that ought not be there and the effects of GMO food are largely unknown at this point. In Europe GMO foods must be labelled. In the US, corporations have fought to keep labellng of GMO foods voluntary at best.

Since we don't know the long term impact of consuming these foods, I'd err on the side of caution. And I damned sure don't wanna feed that stuff to my boy, which is why I buy Cal-certified organic veggies almost exclusively. Sometiems I buy non certified orgnaic stuff but only when I am desperate!

Essentially what we have now is a situation where the budgets for these protective agencies are off the charts, a residual effect of post 9/11 paranoia and fear, and now those in charge have to justify such exorbitant sums. So instead of seeking out real terror plots, they invent them. They'll find say, a young muslim kid and illegally probe through his email and online activities. And if he mentions something anti-semitic, they figure he's just the man they need. (Or hell sometimes even if he doesn't.) So they get a guy to go to him, throw some big sum of money in his face and push him into some crazy terror plot that he otherwise would have neither the inclination or the resources to carry out. The New York Times, Post, New York Daily News, and the Associated Press all carried stories portraying the suspects as incompetent, even pathetic. David Williams was a wannabe gang banger who dreamed of being a chef, while Onta Williams was a cocaine addict apparently brainwashed in prison by Muslims. He was fond of singing and doing impersonations. His sister said he is “the dumbest person on this Earth.” Laguerre Payen, a Haitian immigrant, was unemployed and took medication for schizophrenia. Payen was illiterate and served 15 months for assault after shooting two people with a BB gun. He was off his meds during the terror plot arrest and was hospitalized.
The informant told the FBI all that stopped James Cromitie from committing a terrorist attack was the means to do so. "What you look for is intent versus capability," a senior FBI supervisor said. "This guy had every intent, but limited capability."
Even so, the FBI could not just dismiss him as a wanna-be.
"The problem is if you leave these guys out there, they can find somebody with capability or find some of their own," the supervisor said.

The FBI informant, Shahed (Malik) Hussain, was arrested in 2002 and charged with trying to help people in Albany get drivers’ licenses. Facing deportation, Hussain instead chose to assist the FBI in exchange for a light sentence of five years probation. I first met Democratic presidential hopeful Senator Barack Obam
a almost ten years ago when, as my representative in the Illinois state senate, he came to speak at the University of Chicago. He impressed me as progressive, intelligent and charismatic. I distinctly remember thinking 'if only a man of this calibre could become president one day.'

On Friday Obama gave a speech to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) in Chicago. It had been much anticipated in American Jewish political circles which buzzed about his intensive efforts to woo wealthy pro-Israel campaign donors who up to now have generally leaned towards his main rival Senator Hillary Clinton.

Reviewing the speech, Ha'aretz Washington correspondent Shmuel Rosner concluded that Obama "sounded as strong as Clinton, as supportive as Bush, as friendly as Giuliani. At least rhetorically, Obama passed any test anyone might have wanted him to pass. So, he is pro-Israel. Period."

Israel is "our strongest ally in the region and its only established democracy," Obama said, assuring his audience that "we must preserve our total commitment to our unique defense relationship with Israel by fully funding military assistance and continuing work on the Arrow and related missile defense programs." Such advanced multi-billion dollar systems he asserted, would help Israel "deter missile attacks from as far as Tehran and as close as Gaza." As if the starved, besieged and traumatized population of Gaza are about to develop intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Obama offered not a single word of criticism of Israel, of its relentless settlement and wall construction, of the closures that make life unlivable for millions of Palestinians.

There was no comfort for the hundreds of thousands of people in Gaza who live in the dark, or the patients who cannot get dialysis, because of what Israeli human rights group B'Tselem termed "one cold, calculated decision, made by Israel's prime minister, defense minister, and IDF chief of staff" last summer to bomb the only power plant in Gaza," a decision that "had nothing to do with the attempts to achieve [the] release [of a captured soldier] nor any other military need." It was a gratuitous war crime, one of many condemned by human rights organizations, against an occupied civilian population who under the Fourth Geneva Convention Israel is obligated to protect.

American women are wealthier, healthier and better educated than they were 30 years ago. They’re more likely to work outside the home, and more likely to earn salaries comparable to men’s when they do. They can leave abusive marriages and sue sexist employers. They enjoy unprecedented control over their own fertility. On some fronts — graduation rates, life expectancy and even job security — men look increasingly like the second sex.

But all the achievements of the feminist era may have delivered women to greater unhappiness. In the 1960s, when Betty Friedan diagnosed her fellow wives and daughters as the victims of “the problem with no name,” American women reported themselves happier, on average, than did men. Today, that gender gap has reversed. Male happiness has inched up, and female happiness has dropped. In postfeminist America, men are happier than women.

This is “The Paradox of Declining Female Happiness,” the subject of a provocative paper from the economists Betsey Stevenson and Justin Wolfers. The paper is fascinating not only because of what it shows, but because the authors deliberately avoid floating an easy explanation for their data.

The End of History and the Last Man is a 1992 book by Francis Fukuyama, expanding on his 1989 essay "The End of History?", published in the international affairs journal The National Interest. In the book, Fukuyama argues that the advent of Western liberal democracy may signal the end point of humanity's sociocultural evolution and the final form of human government.
"What we may be witnessing is not just the end of the Cold War, or the passing of a particular period of post-war history, but the end of history as such: that is, the end point of mankind's ideological evolution and the universalization of Western liberal democracy as the final form of human government."

This thesis conflicts strongly with Karl Marx's version of the "end of prehistory".[2]. Fukuyama's thesis, coming at the end of the Cold War, is an obvious reference to Marx's phrase. However, Fukuyama draws from the work of the source Marx got the phrase from, the German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. In particular, Fukuyama is influenced by the interpretation of Hegel by the French thinker Alexandre Kojève, both arguing that the historical progression has led towards secular free-market democracy (conceived in terms of a multi-party system of political representation). Fukuyama seems to have been pointed in Kojève's direction by the prominent Straussian political philosopher Allan Bloom, who taught Fukuyama.
