Sista Lola, the problem with the premise that blacks who claimed 'Indian' blood were simply trying to remove themselves from pure African blood requires that one buys into the assumption that pure African blood is somehow 'less-than'.
Black people in America come in a wide variety of hues, shapes and colors.
It's not all a simple mixture of African slaves and European rapists.
