This is an old picture. The only loyalty I see is to the profession of saving someones life, regardless of color or ideology.

Big Man, DV, and DMG. Your collective comments perfectly illustrate the dilemma that "good folks" face everyday. I'm one of those folks - aka folks tryin to live right.
His Side (my best friend and likely the man of my dreams whose proposal I will eventually accept) is a Christian, but he doesn't display the churchy vision of a "man of faith." He's a soldier. A fighter. A man's man. I am slowly growing to love his brand of "touch mine and die." He protects me with his entire being. As a peacemaker, I had a hard time with his ways.
Sidenote: When I first met him, I described him as King David meets Samson. Not a single "soft" bone in his body. Anyway...
Quoting the scripture about 'loving our enemies' and 'turning the other cheek' is a churched response that I know well. But DV responds the way His Side does: STEP. OFF.
Then DMG comes with a response about loyalty to the medical profession. I believe all of these responses reflect honor, and they're not necessarily mutually exclusive.
One day, after years of service as a treasurer, administrator, and card carrying minister, I left the church. The thing is, I never left God. I have come to understand Him in a more personal way and grown in ways that church (unfortunately) can stunt.
I learned this: God wants us to be loyal to the commitments we make (DMG's position). I believe scripture gives us a look into the wisdom of God (Big Man's response). But dammit, God is a God of j.u.s.t.i.c.e. Jesus was called a Lion and a Lamb because He displayed uncommon wisdom regarding when to fight and when to stand down. DV's response represents the times a man is supposed to draw blood protecting his domain.
Stay out of a man's domain and you'll be fine. Keep your paws off my family and you can move along. Back off my wife and I'll back off your life.
True wisdom leads us to discern the appropriate times to embrace our lamb or channel our lion. I believe that's called "being led by the Spirit."

We are in agreement. I don't disagree with our host about some Bubba stepping on my porch to harm me or mine. I'll guarantee you that he'll be calling on his god, and maybe the last thing he'll see is my face. At the same time, if he rolled into my trauma bay bleeding, the last thing he may see is my face...behind a surgical mask as I try to save his sorry life.
Some time ago, I caught hell on this blog because I said I didn't identify myself as a Black Doctor, but as a doctor who was born black. The difference is when I put on the scrubs and white coat, I leave my politics, judgments, feelings, and everything else at the door. You just have to. You can't just let people die because you don't like them. And believe me, I've had alot of people I didn't like come my way.

Shannon(his wife) also tells the dispatcher that she didn’t drive Gary to the hospital because she’s sick and has a fever. She also initially refuses to assess her husband’s condition because she gets seizures when she’s stressed and she doesn’t “want to be traumatized.”
