Submariner's Definition of A Brotha

By Jason Cole,
“I hear all the negative things that he has too many things going on in his life,” Shaw said. “But if [the NFL] is saying that Myron Rolle is a bad example, that’s a joke. … Myron is what you want all these kids to be. Every one of these kids should want to be Myron Rolle.

“The reason I say he’s going to be a 10-year veteran is he’s a guy who is going to out-work everybody. He’s not just going to rest on his athletic ability.”

Truly, everyone should strive to be like Rolle, a Rhodes Scholar and safety from Florida State who hopes to one day become a neurosurgeon and has already started a foundation to promote physical fitness.

“When coaches ask you what’s important in your life, usually you can get away with saying God, then family, then football. But a lot of coaches out there want to hear football, then God, then family.”

Rolle has returned to football after a year at Oxford University in England where he worked toward a master’s in medical anthropology. He’s still studying while training and must return later for a final week of classes and then for exams before graduating. He is an absurdly polite young man with personality and charisma.

“The impression I get from people around the NFL – not necessarily in it, but around it – is that the NFL wants players for whom football is their No. 1 priority, their No. 2 priority and their No. 3 priority,” Rolle said.

“For me, I’ve never been someone with a singular talent. I have other abilities and interests and I think I would be doing a disservice to me, my team, my family, everyone who has invested stock in me if I was just so isolated in one thing. … The thing I always try to present to people in the NFL as far as my commitment is that my academics and my concerns at Oxford or as an outside philanthropist can help my football abilities. It can help me be someone more disciplined on the field, help me be someone more balanced and knowledgeable. It can help the other guys if they want to get involved in the foundation or the community rather than going out and partying or getting in trouble somehow.”

I hear ya fellas.

I like dude too.

But let's be real here.

Does he reallly have any greater chance to be somebody's boss than T.O. or Ocho Cinco?

Fact is the black men most likely to own a professional sports franchise look more like Curtis Jackson and Sean Dot Carter than Ivy League Negros.

The Ivy League is not taking black men and preparing them to own.

I mean. Why are we impressed with this young man?

Of course, he fits the nostalgic warm and fuzzy of the old-fashioned Special Jackie Robinson type Negro.

You know ... black ... athletic ... but "different". (The implication is he is not like all those "other" black men. He's ... civilized)

Why do we celebrate his acceptance at a school like Oxford?

Why is that assumed a Come Up?

Follow me?

He is studying medical anthropology ... at Oxford.

OK.

Personally, I'd be more impressed with a young black athlete who failed to study at Oxford but was conversant in the history of the Ancient Indigenous Moors.

Puck this brother. He is the ultimate turncoat. Do you mugga fugga know what the Rhodes foundation and Cecil Rhodes stand for? Do you what Oxford University pledges. Naw Bra. Not my game.

Now if he ran up in the bitch(oxford) and laid some bombs in that fucka, I would be hanging out with him.

Educated?, hard working? Intellectual? How could a bright young man like him not know that Slick Willie ran a bunch of those Rhode Scholar (40 of them) mother fuckers in the white house (in administration) when he was raping us.

It is the same as you guys praising me for a member of the Klan. Overt vs covert is doesn't matter. I would rather die than become a member of such a evil organization that guaranteed the destruction of Africa. I would hang my face in shame bro.

Hang the brother up for a role model in medicine?

You killing me right?

Football ability?

Currently being poke and prodded for acceptance in that league. Hey Bra run that 40 for me.

Shitttt, not a 4.5 -Draft him in the 4 round.

Slavery dude.

DV, Sub,- Talented brother- don't get me wrong. I don't hate him at all. However I just don't need the plantation meme holding this guy up as the role model of who we should and can be. The last time it was Tiger Woods.

His Plantation choices have freaked me out. No amount of money could get me to be or do the following 3 things.

1. A nigga killa Rhodes Scholar- Call it what it is.

2. A plantation medicine pusher

3. A slave gladiator- to ruin the body ala Earl Campbell

Wax ain't buying. And oh yeah, Fuck Cecil Rhodes.

The Delusions of Cecil Rhodes – The Racist Inspired Rhodes Scholarship

Com on people don't let them get away with this shit!!

The Rhodes Scholarship Foundation

For more than three centuries after European settlers arrived in South Africa in 1652, the so-called white rulers viewed the so-called blacks only as laborers and denied them proper schooling.

Among these overlords was Cecil Rhodes, prime minister of England’s Cape Colony, now the country’s southwestern region. Cecil made a fortune off stolen African land, skills and labour. His modus operandi was cynicaL crass inhumane exploitation of Africans.

“Nine-tenths of them will have to spend their lives in manual labor, and the sooner that is brought home to them, the better,” Rhodes said in 1893.

On September 19, 1877, Rhodes drafted his first will; at that time, he had an estate of only about £10,000. (Although he changed his will quite a number of times in years following, the objective remained the same. After his death, the directors of the Rhodes Trust set up the Rhodes Scholarships as the best way to achieve his objectives.) The first clause of the 1877 will bequeathed his wealth as follows:

To and for the establishment, promotion and development of a Secret Society, the true aim and object whereof shall be for the extension of British rule throughout the world, the perfecting of a system of emigration from the United Kingdom, and of colonisation by British subjects of all lands where the means of livelihood are attainable by energy, labour and enterprise, and especially the occupation by British settlers of the entire Continent of Africa, the Holy Land, the Valley of the Euphrates, the Islands of Cyprus and Candia, the whole of South America, the Islands of the Pacific not heretofore possessed by Great Britain, the whole of the Malay Archipelago, the seaboard of China and Japan, the ultimate recovery of the United States of America as an integral part of the British Empire, the inauguration of a system of Colonial representation in the Imperial Parliament which may tend to weld together the disjointed members of the Empire and, finally, the foundation of so great a Power as to render wars impossible and promote the best interests of humanity.

What????
Phxiiga Please!

Rhodes Trust currently being managed by Lord Rothchild(#1 nigga killa) join forces with Mandela Foundation to build exceptional leadership Capacity in Africa. (Can you say Zimbabwe?) LOL.

Oh I can stop laughing.

OK for shits and giggles, look at some of the trustees and Board members of Mandela Rhodes.

Robert Fellowes is Chairman of Barclays Private Banking, where he has worked since leaving Buckingham Palace after twenty-two years of service to the Queen(number 2 nigga killa) as Assistant Private Secretary, Deputy Private Secretary and then Private Secretary. Before going to Buckingham Palace he worked in the City of London for many years. He is also a non-executive Director of SABMiller plc. He is Vice-Chairman of the Commonwealth Institute, Chairman of the Prison Reform Trust, and a Trustee of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust. He also chairs the Voices Foundation. Lord Fellowes has been a Rhodes Trustee since 2000, and a founding Trustee of The Mandela Rhodes Foundation since 2003. CFR, Bildeberg etc.etc.

Julian Ogilvie Thompson is a director of De Beers Consolidated Mines and De Beers SA. This is Funny!
Blood diamonds in the house. He is a Rhodes Scholar, and after leaving Oxford joined Anglo American Corporation in London. After his return to Johannesburg he was appointed Personal Assistant to Mr Harry Oppenheimer. He later became an Executive Director of Anglo American. He succeeded Mr Oppenheimer as Minorco SA of Luxembourg as Anglo American plc, becoming Chairman and Chief Executive until July 2002, after which he continued as non-executive Chairman until November 2002. He has received several honours. He was Vice Chairman of The Urban Foundation and is now a director of The National Business Initiative. He was a member of President Mbeki's Big Business Council. Mr Ogilvie Thomson has been a founding Trustee of The Mandela Rhodes Foundation since 2003.CFR

William Waldegrave is a Vice Chairman of the Investment Banking Department and Chairman of the European Financial Institutions Group at UBS Investment Bank. He served as a Conservative Member of the British Parliament for close to twenty years, including sixteen years' service as a Minister. Seven of these were as a Cabinet Minister (Minister of Agriculture, Chief Secretary of the Treasury, Secretary of State for Health, and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster). Educated at Oxford University and Harvard, before entering Parliament he worked in the Cabinet Office in Whitehall; was Political Secretary to Prime Minister Edward Heath; and for GEC Ltd. He is Chairman of the Rhodes Trust, Chairman of the National Museum of Science and Industry, and has been a founding Trustee of The Mandela Rhodes Foundation since 2003.

So let me see dress up some former Rhodes Scholars
who are current servants of the Elite ...put a black skully on them and Walla. Forget the past.

u killing me dude.
Tell me when to stop there are more... Most of these cats including Ruth Deech are card carrying members of Bildeberg.

Look it up.

It as crazy as saying we have the David Duke NAACP fund. It don't make sense. Live in the past? Have you really look at Africa lately? I mean like TODAY.

I know you got fired up after seeing Invictus. :) but bra , people are being wiped out quicker than you can say Morgan Freeman looks like Nelson Ma...

Who will Thank me?????

KonWomyn said...

Personally I'm impressed. I'd be even more impressed if he studied at Oxford and used his private research time to learn about the medical practices of the Ancient Indigenous Moors.

He has a greater chance of becoming an anti-intellectual intellectual studying Medical Anthropology and learning about the healing practices of traditional societies than someone doing a straight sciences degree.

But hey what do I know, maybe I missed the potential he lacks to become all that in Googling him. I guess his interest in obesity or setting up a free medical centre and training centre for athletes in the Bahamas - don't count for much.

sakredkow said...

Copying and pasting the bios of three of the trustees of the Mandela Rhodes Foundation hardly seems like much of a counterargument to me. Everyone is invited to go over and the check bios of all the trustees on the site - it all looks pretty transparent. If you want to say it's not, fine, make your argument.

"Most of these cats including Ruth Deech are card carrying members of the Bildeberg."

Which cats? How do you know? And why the F should I care whether someone is a member of the Bildeberg? Got anything more than a used conspiracy theory from the John Birch Society to sell me?

You could still convince me you are right, that Rhodes scholars and the scholarship program is evil incarnate. I don't know all that much about it truthfully, but I know enough for sure to see when someone's softsoaping me for their personal outdated ideological fixe.

But you're welcome to persuade me with a real argument. Just save the cut and paste shit for someone who's impressed by quantity of text rather than quality.

that dude said...

Hey Wax -

Why are you speaking English? Isn't that the language of the oppressor? Did an African build that computer you're typing on? Maybe you should reject that too.

KonWomyn said...

Wax,

Why are you skipping over the other trustees like Prof Njabulo Ndebele and Prof Jakes Grewel who were anti-apartheid activists? I have my own anti-feelings towards the Mandela Rhodes Scholarship, but because its called the Mandela Rhodes Scholarship; it's only fair to give a fuller picture of the board. It doesn't absolve it of it's dark legacy at all, but people like Njabulo Ndebele are the literary critics who got me started on the academic path I'm on questining the authority and truth-value assigned to Western discourse.

submariner said...

Actually if you read the article carefully you would see that the "plantation meme" is not promoting this young man at all. Although the writer gives obligatory and generic praise for his accomplishments, it is almost completely undermined by the revelation of the great degree of skepticism regarding this guy.

I'm going to guess that Wax is a white man with radical politics based on his hypothetical of being a KKK member. White or black that's fine and I don't mean to offend. But based on the logic used above W.E.B. Du Bois and Eric Williams would be considered quislings.

I never said that Rolle was my definition of a brother. Just cited him as a figure who doesn't fit the negative stereotype reserved for black athletes but is maligned nonetheless.

sakredkow said...

Now someone who's an academic path (or any other path) to "question the authority and truth-value assigned to Western discourse..." I can dig that. That makes sense.

The first doxastic rule for philosophers always has been and always will be: That which is true, I will hold to be true.

Never said that dude was my definition of a brotha. Just cited him as a figure who doesn't fit the negative stereotype reserved for black athletes and still gets maligned.

Hot Wax I suggest that you read the article more carefully. The writer opens with generic and obligatory praise for Rolle. But the real intrigue and central point is the skepticism surrounding the man. Even the quote makes him sound cavalier if not ambivalent about football.

Based on the Wax's own hypothetical about being a Klan member, I will venture that he is a white man with radical politics. White or black that's fine and I don't question the sincerity of his beliefs. But based on his earlier logic even stalwarts like W.E.B. DuBois and Eric Williams amount to little more than quislings.

OK,

Let me get this straight, all of as sudden I should just wake up and forget all the past history and pretend that the rhode scholars are now a wonderful organization because of them teaming with Mandela. All is forgiven and that the (Scholars- I pulled out the previous R. scholars- not the white guys) their membership should not be suspect. Do you guys know the entire history of the Rhodes trust to this day?

Jeez Wonderful.

I must be anti English, techno, and or history meme, because I know that the group to this day is just as corrupt as Madoff and have been co-opting the best and the brightest for all the wrong reasons. Must be against Whites -right?

Sub, Wax ain't white. If I was, who knows I might be buying this shit. I know the pain of Rhodes. No, it ain't over-never will be for me. A bunch of House nuggas want to give the group a pass today, be my guest. It is as stupid as saying all Poverty is eliminate in Africa because Sun City is the bomb. I know phx, and dude might not know the real deal behind all the elite connection and I could spend all night hooking them up on that. However, Not preaching tonight- just shock that people out here want to argue for their oppressor. Be my guess.

Phx, for real-Its almost like arguing that a little mercury in my mouth won't hurt me. Asking me to accept Rhodes Trust is not the same as asking me to use this computer. I can never be half way pregnant dude. Please Read about the current make up. No amount of co-opting Mandela can change the charter and direction. I cut and paste "your" link dude. Just took a look at the board members and pasted it right back to you to say bulllshit. Look up each one and see. Been at this 15 years. Don't spin this to a black and white issue, it is not that simple. The Elite's De-evolution process don't give a rat ass about you if you are white or black. If you are on this blog that means you don't have a pass.

My history of this Rhodes research goes back to Clinton times. I have not even touch the surface like I said. I did not show up to this party yesterday, so save that racist meme and Hegelian Headfake bullshit for some else who wants to create red herrings.

The game ain't over. Look around you.

No amount of rebranding makes Rhodes a good thing.

No amount of entering and working in plantation medicine appeals to me.

Finally ,not much in the NFL Gladiator meme appeals to me. The NFL combine and the draft and its similarity to Slavery purchases blows my mind.

To hell with Bill Bradley. To hell with Rolle. Any body who signs up with these wicked mo foes will never be on my Xmas list.

Not calling you a racist Wax. Just found it odd and thought it was an inadvertent disclosure on your part to offer the analogy with you as a Klan member.

My own knowledge of Rhodes only goes back two years ago when I read the works of Jerome Karabel and later Carroll Quigley. The history you cite is no less valid for the founders of the United States. So what?

Not trying to win but your speaking in hyperbole and confusing rhetoric with reality. That's why I picked the the very real examples of Eric Williams and W.E.B. Dubois to refute your hypothesis.

But Sub ...

You gotta admit. Wax makes an excellent point.

Black people proud of a black man winning a Rhodes Scholarship is as bizarre as Jews proud of a Jew awarded a Hitler Scholarship.

Rhodes was certainly responsible for the deaths of more black people than Hitler was responsible for the deaths of Jews.

Not knocking young Rolle.

Just questioning our strange value system.

Today millions of African Americans and Africans are dying of biological warfare disguised by whom? And developed where?

...Specific outbreaks of Cholera,, Bubonic Plague, Anthrax and HIV were not by disguised and developed by Africans...but by men and insitutions like Rhodes...some of whom are from America.

I don't think you quite get it yet sista.

Rhodes, Gates, Cheney, Malthus, Wolfowitz, Bush, T.X. Huxley, Rockefeller, Darwin, Rothschild, Monsanto, ADM, Kopowski - are all the same cats - working toward the same genocide.

Their common denominator is not the abstraction of nationality.

Their common denominator is ideology. It is spiritual.

Whether I call the pine forests of North Carolina home or Dzimba dza mabwe home has no significance.

Now Kay Duub ... it sounds as if several of your friends may have been the beneficiaries of 'Rhodes Scholarships'.

Congratulations. More power to them. It is ONE hell of an accomplishment. Were my son offered a Rhodes scholarship I'd be proud as hell.

But my son would understand who Cecil Rhodes is and what ideology he represents and how that ideology threatens his very existence even to this day.

Hopefully he will have better options for education than a symbolic year at Oxford.

Most black Americans know more about Pacman Jones than they do Cecil Rhodes.

Most Plantation Negros still chuckle when presented with the possibility of an ancient indigenous Moorish people in America.

Why? They've been intentionally miseducated. This thread challenges our value system and our presumptions about education.

It is not meant to insult your individual friends who happen to be Rhodes scholars.

KonWomyn said...

Hey DV,

Sometimes things get a bit crazy when you go back n forth threading and it’s more about proving a point and I’m not really innocent in all this, I didn’t mean to cause offence by following taking your logic to the extreme...see what too much time online can turn you into...

Nah I didn’t feel you were insulting my friends, no that would be a s—t—r—e—t--c—h, ‘sides this isn’t about them or any of the recipients but what Rhodes symbolizes. The way you have articulated your argument now; I get it and I can’t disagree, but only add my objections to the Rhodes Scholarship fund.

Apart from its imperialist history the way in which the scholarships are administered is extremely skewed. The USA has 32 Rhodes scholars per year, Canada 11, Australia 11 but Zimbabwe has 2, Botswana has 1, Zambia has 2 and South Africa has 4 to 9, yet this is where Cracker Rhodes looted his fortunes and secured the wealth of his kith and kin for generations to come. Colonial Zambia and Zimbabwe were named Northern Rhodesia and Rhodesia after him and Rhodes is buried on a mountain 25km from my home city in Zimbabwe – but only 2 Zimbabwean scholars may apply. (*SMH*)

It’s blatantly obvious that the donors dictate the allocation of resources, not the spirit of furthering scholarship – why else would Uganda have been axed due to lack of funds but America remains with 32.

When the Rhodes Scholarship became Mandela Rhodes and I was finishing university in SA at the time because what Mandela represented was completely opposite to Rhodes, but corporate appeasement dressed up the spirit of reconciliation and the rainbow nation won over – if it were me, regardless of it being an international trust I’d rename it all together. Or better yet be seeking my own set of donors for the kind of scholars and schools I'd like to see shifting the centre of power and knowledge from Oxford to somewhere else, where Ivan van Sertima and Steve Biko are essential reading.

And things like this:

"Most black Americans know more about Pacman Jones than they do Cecil Rhodes.
Most Plantation Negros still chuckle when presented with the possibility of an ancient indigenous Moorish people in America."

reinforce why digital spaces like this are increasingly vital for the re-education of Black peops.

...peace
