You are the role model for your own kids. If your kids are seeking role models in actors and sports stars then they've got problems or you haven't done your job.
If you are afraid your kids are going to say, "fuck it pass the hog maws and fat back I want to get big like that girl in Precious so I can be a successful actor...then well they are just dumb kids, you can't do shit about it, so you better hope they study hard at McDonald's University...ding fries are done.
While it's good to be inspired by what someone has done, the concept of a 'role model' is a li'l Plantation-esque. The herds are conditioned to think of a 'role model' as someone who is exists outside of their immediate surroundings and someone who is famous, but they barely know on a personal level. Yet who sets the primary example for a child, who instills a child's values - that figure out there or the primary caregiver (parents or guardian) at home and members of the family and community?
When a popular'role model' fails in the public's eye they are demonised - just like with Tiger or with rappers. Delores Tucker tried this with Tupac. Mothers have tried this with Beyonce. Not too long ago the various Anonymi of DV.net tried The Fallen Tiger.
They tried to perform a moral lynching of The Fallen Tiger, claiming their 'role model' had let them down, but all such attempts were shot down with great speed and dexterity at DV.net. His TV apology was also criticised as a public crucifixion, for some similar reasons.
Why is that false concept and standard now being applied to Gaby Sidibe - so that what? Sure she can act, she's obese and it's in her health interests to lose lots of weight, but I think we all know this. A role model she is not.
Whether you find the concept of "Role Model" apropos or not ... is not the point.
The post is a commentary about memes, real danger and proportion.
Normally, black men, be they Michael Vick, 50 Cent, Tiger Woods, Lil Wayne, Ron Artest or the tattooed Kobe Bryant are publicly castigated for "being the wrong role models" for black kids.
The implication is that their anti-establishment personas and willingness to dabble in violence or heterosexual sex is somehow the "wrong" message to send to black kids.
One cannot read a story about the black football playing Rhodes scholar, Myron Rolle, without suffering through the meme "Myron Rolle is what you want all these kids to be".
"These" meaning black kids.
"The Role Model" meme is alive and well.
A few months back when the young black Chicago high school student was struck in the head by some thugs and killed ... Plantation Negros were falling over each other to be the first to imply there was something "wrong" with young black people (Undercover Black Man) ... and that they were "killing each other off".
It was often asked what role "Rap Music" played in this type of violence.
(Peep anything from Michael Fisher)
"Something must be done" they declared. ('Massa, please take over').
Well ... for every black person who will die of violence ... 44 will die from obesity.
Celebrating an obese teen ... without addressing the catastrophic consequences of obesity ... is socially irresponsible.
If we are putting rappers in jail simply for owning handguns ... when in fact greasy genetically modified food is killing 500% more black people than guns ... we are sending the wrong message.
Celebrating a teen as tremendously obese as this young woman is as effectively dangerous as celebrating a young black drug dealer with guns and crack falling out of his pockets.
I hear ya, obesity is killing us like flies, but if all your charges against society are true, then are you just as guilty for 'celebrating' Christopher Wallace's as one of the baaadest lyricists of all time, (John Keates and all them can fall back rite?).
The "Role Model" part comes into play in that some will see Gabby and think, "If that big heffa can do well being what she is, I can do better with what I am.". Some my be inspired to see one of the least rising to be 'one of the best'.
LOL, I wouldn't bet on that, Plastic Kim could die on a surgeon's table just like Donda West.
"Biggie was a prophet."
Yea. But he was one obese prophet, suffered child abuse no different to Ms Sidibe who's been offered a seat at the "Feel Good Liberal" table. The difference is in the historic impact of one and the potential of another.
She's lost 40lbs thus far and if she continued to lose good for her, how much 'exotic appeal' she would continue to wield after that would be severly diminished because of a simultaneous fetish and rejection with the BigBlackBody in Hollywood.

How are we ... as "educated" black folks ... going to let this happen to this poor little girl and millions like her ... and just look the other way?
Or ... how are we going to simply patronize her with temporary applause, and just "be happy for her" cliches?
“This girl was selected for this role BECAUSE she was fat.” True. “You may see her in one more Tyler Perry flick. And then that's it. This is the end of the line for her.”
Not true.
She has the Plantation Stamps of Approval the Oscars, BAFTAS and Sundance Film Fest; a very, very long red carpet is rolled out for her. Study finds median wealth for single black women at $5
Tuesday, March 09, 2010 By Tim Grant, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Women of all races bring home less income and own fewer assets, on average, than men of the same race, but for single black women the disparities are so overwhelmingly great that even in their prime working years their median wealth amounts to only $5.
In a groundbreaking report released Monday by a leading economic research group, social scientists turned a spotlight on the grave financial challenges facing an often overlooked group of women, many of whom could not take an unpaid sick day or repair a major appliance without going into debt.
"It's rather shocking," said Meizhu Lui, director of the Closing the Gap Initiative based in Oakland, Calif., who contributed to the report "Lifting as We Climb: Women of Color, Wealth and America's Future."
Among the most startling revelations in the wealth data is that while single white women in the prime of their working years (ages 36 to 49) have a median wealth of $42,600 (still only 61 percent of their single white male counterparts), the median wealth for single black women is only $5.
"Even for those of us who have been looking at the wealth gap for a while, we were shocked and amazed at how little women of color have," Ms. Lui said.
Researchers at the Insight Center for Community Economic Development, based in Oakland, Calif., analyzed data from the 2007 Survey of Consumer Finances, a voluminous report the Federal Reserve Board issues every three years that examines household finances in this country.
Wealth, or net worth, measures the total of one's assets -- cash in the bank, stocks, bonds and real estate; minus debts -- home mortgages, auto loans, credit cards and student loans. The most recent financial data was collected before the economic downturn, so the current numbers likely are worse now than at the time of the study.

The founders of the American state understood that the proper functioning of a democracy required an educated electorate. It is this understanding that justifies a system of public education and that led slaveholders to resist the spread of literacy among their chattels. But the meaning of "educated" has changed beyond recognition in two hundred years. Reading, writing, and arithmetic are no longer sufficient to decide on public policy. Now we need quantum mechanics and molecular biology. The knowledge required for political rationality, once available to the masses, is now in the possession of a specially educated elite, a situation that creates a series of tensions and contradictions in the operation of representative democracy.

But on topic.

Get real.
Gabby won't live to see Lil Kim's age.
Lil Wayne?
Genius.
One of the top 4 English language poets of the past 200 years.
In the future, they will look at what Lil Wayne did to rap pretty much the way they look at what Bird did to Jazz.
But today the Plantation imprisons the man for exercising his CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT.
Lil Wayne is a political prisoner.
Viva Weezy F. Baby!
