"...The other illusory notion which is adduced is the statement that anger, desire, worldliness and the other traits of this kind cannot be torn from the human creature for as long as he lives. This is also an error, into which a faction has fallen imagines that the purpose of spiritual struggle is the complete suppression and effacement of these attributes. Such a view is absurd, for desire has been created for a purpose, and is an indispensable part of human nature: should the desire for food cease man would die; should the desire for sexual intercourse cease man would die out; and should man feel no anger man would not be able to defend himself from those things which threatens his life. When the basis of desire remains, the love of property must necessarily remain also, which encourages one to guard it. What is required is not the total extirpation of these things, but rather the restoration of their balance and moderation, which is the middle point between excess and defect. With regard to the trait of anger, what is needed is sound ardour, which lies in the avoidance of both recklessness and cowardice, and generally to be strong in oneself but nevertheless under the control of the intellect."
Yea, II it's quite a thing among post-menopause, single middle-class Caucasians. I watched a docu last Nov about these +55 yr olds who go to the Caribbean in search of the 18-26 virile 'Mandingo'. They travel in small groups of three or more and Jamaica, Barbados and Dominica are the topspots.
These women looked like they'd had one cigarrette too many and probably regretted the bra-burning and marriage rejection of the women's lib days. They were on a mission to find holiday love - even if the young guys didn't speak English it didn't matter, like in Dominica. All they wanted was for them to dance with and have two/three word conversations of "you're beautiful" and "I love you". Meanwhile these guys know just what they're doing - they'd tell the cameras the women were old and ugly and they wanted money to take care of themselves or others for those who had families and girlfriends.
There's also some exotic resort that's opened up in Jamaica, where they cater for sex tourists, but most of the escorts are White.
Other than the obvious overbearingly American mantra of all work and no play and other Protestant work ethic allusions you don't find this sentence strange?
What is the primal drive to work? We work to have more money to have more stuff. This is very basic...males in most species have some variation on this theme, and it's usually to attract the opposite sex. Passing on our genes is what drives us. In a sense Tiger Woods and (other successful young men as MOTI put it) aren't actually out of line if we look at this from an mammalian behavior viewpoint. Human society says that he is, but society has often put artificial constraints on our instinctual behavior.
In a nutshell, it is unrealistic or naive to expect a successful handsome man to be faithful throughout his marriage? Narrowing this down to those who are in happy marriages that is.
Working with all males (most of whom are married), this is the same crap I hear from them all the time. And none ever directly answer the question if they are currently cheating or not.
And as far as "Passing on our genes is what drives us" isn't that the very reason for marriage and commitment?
Well NEA, it isn't too much to ask a successful and handsome man to be faithful; he just has to find the right woman.
In my family, longevity in relationships is not uncommon. My maternal Grandparents were married over fifty years until my Grandma Jo passed in 2006. She was quite beautiful and that is what all the old guys at the funeral said! hehehe Seriously though, my Grandpa has been around the world spoke at Oxford or Cambridge one of those hi falutin places and he never cheated on his wife...even when she came down with Alzheimers.
Grandpa James has said that he never cheated on Grandma Jo because he had no need to cheat; she was everything he wanted and needed in a mate. He also said that the fact that she was so beautiful and had a good personality helped him to stay faithful.
Like I said in another thread, if someone has found their true soulmate cheating NEVER occurs; even after fifty years.
Grandpa is handsome himself; within a year and a half of Grandma's death he remarried and seems to be doing well.
My paternal Grandparents are both still alive and have now been married for going on sixty three years in July of this year! Grandpa Butch said he NEVER cheated on Grandma Earl because he had no need to cheat on her and he doesn't believe in that mess. It also doesn't hurt that she is very beautiful and fulfilled Grandpa's needs and vise versa.
It is not idealistic to expect that some people on the planet who marry under a monogamous aegis can stay faithful and love one another until they pass. People have been doing this for thousands of years. I look forward to me and my husband's 50th wedding anniversary one day.
Those are great stories and perhaps even true, but always remember that the role of mythology is not truth, but how it shapes people. And your grandfathers, regardless of whether they ever cheated, obviously understand how their words shape the grandkiddies and their value systems.
Not calling gramps a liar. Just a reminder that revisionist history doesn't only happen in the classroom.
M., In my family and also my country, marriage longevity and faithfulness is not uncommon either. I suppose that's where the idealism comes from. The problem today is that too many men and even women have bought into this biological behavior and "a man is only as faithful as his options" bull, which excuses the irrational actions.
While it may be a man's biological imperative to screw as much as possible, it is also a sociological imperative to be a responsible husband and positive role model to the kiddies. Humans are thinking beings. Period.
A man who has a strong sense of respect and love for his woman (yes, provided that he is married to the right one) can withstand more coquettes than the guy who has been developed with a "we men are just wired that way" mentality.
If not ready for marriage and not mature enough to embrace the emotional obligations of family, it may be best to not get married.

You had to live—did live, from habit that became instinct—in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized."

The founders of the American state understood that the proper functioning of a democracy required an educated electorate. It is this understanding that justifies a system of public education and that led slaveholders to resist the spread of literacy among their chattels. But the meaning of "educated" has changed beyond recognition in two hundred years. Reading, writing, and arithmetic are no longer sufficient to decide on public policy. Now we need quantum mechanics and molecular biology. The knowledge required for political rationality, once available to the masses, is now in the possession of a specially educated elite, a situation that creates a series of tensions and contradictions in the operation of representative democracy.

Women who travel for that anonymous sex.
All that "education", career and money and they have to fly thousands of miles to pay for it from some horny teenagers. What is it all worth?
