The founders of the American state understood that the proper functioning of a democracy required an educated electorate. It is this understanding that justifies a system of public education and that led slaveholders to resist the spread of literacy among their chattels. But the meaning of "educated" has changed beyond recognition in two hundred years. Reading, writing, and arithmetic are no longer sufficient to decide on public policy. This is one of my two favorite Barack shots. The other is him in the Oval Office with the young son of a staffer. Obama bows deeply to the young man so the boy can touch his hair to confirm it's like his own.
Denark Vessy - how do "portraits upon the wall" of Obama and other "favorable" elected leaders to most Blacks substitute for the abundant angst that is present now that these people of this same ideology now dominate so many of our key institutions that the Black community looks toward for our civic services?
The damaging inverse of "White Right Wing" unjustified attacks upon Obama is the fact that his approval rating is at 90% and the MACHINE that he sits atop of is similarly appraised by Black folks.
When we as a people allow the populace to live vicariously through a politician or an external party - don't be surprised if the party grows powerful and we are left to adore the pictures and the "limited Edition Obama Plates" on our mantles as we sit home unemployed.
