I recommend the following sequence.

Ouspensky's Tertium Organum - a great overview of the theosophical new age at the turn of the century. Before he encountered Gurdjieff - the amount of speculative hot mess in vogue at that time is astonishing. It sets a nice frame - imoho - for the Livingstonian ouevre.

Ouspensky's Psychology of Man's Possible Evolution - a simple and concise description of the problematique (post Gurdjieff) , Gurdjieff's Herald of Coming Good - written at the earliest stages of his organized work and then retracted.
