I heard on the radio today that Vegas performer Danny Gans died of a toxic reaction to a pain-killer medication he was prescribed by his doctor.
Hey IWAIW,
Dilaudid is no joke. I'm not a big fan of it, but that's personal style. I wonder if he also had impaired liver or kidney function? It's an effective medication but an overdose, intentional or otherwise can cause respiratory depression...meaning that your breathing gets too shallow to oxygenate your blood adequately or get rid of carbon dioxide.
He also had polycythemia vera. Sometimes with this condition a person can have lower than normal oxygen in their blood already despite an abnormally increased concentration of red blood cells. The pathologist said he had toxic levels of dilaudid, which might suggest taking too much, difficulty metabolizing the dilaudid (liver) or inability to adequately excrete what it's broken down to (kidney). The man was also hypertensive...which is a leading cause of kidney disease. Unintentional overdose? Possible. I think I can count the number of times I've written for a prescription for home as I usually only us it for inpatients. But I'm notoriously cheap with the opioid pain meds. My personal philosophy is the minimum amount of medication to do the job.
You sound like a good doc Doc.
Wish there were more like you.
I think people should be aware of the diversity of opinion and practice among you cats and take all advice on an individual basis after doing their own independent research.
They should also be leery of modern medicine practitioners who refuse to maintain an open state of mind regarding "unorthodox" (not monopolized by modern medicine) - yet quite relevant theories.
Don't you think?
...actually, my approach is mainly how it's taught in the literature. Everyone acquires their own style based on where they trained and the population they are used to treating. Well, an "open mind" within the confines of good science and evidence. If a patient of mine wants to use "natural" supplements, I don't mind as long as it's not something that will interfere or interact in an adverse way to my plan. Remember those "nuts and berries" are broken down in the gut and bind receptors or upregulate this or that just like your medication in a bottle. The difference is the medication has a more predictable action. Natural remedies should be quantified just like other medications in my opinion. If this were so, the Nutraceutical industry would likely lose alot of business, because their claims would be under more scrutiny. Bottom line for me is show me the evidence...for everything.
I don't know much about "nutraceuticals" Doc.
I think one should be as careful with natural supplements as they are with unnatural supplements.
Considering that fact people are killed and injured in this country exponentially more frequently each year with unnatural supplements than they are by natural products, I am surprised mainstream medicine doesn't warn accordingly.
Remember Doc, "nuts and berries" were man's medicine long before so many physicians became retailers for Merck and Pfizer.
I still laugh everytime I see this!

@DV,
you said:
"80% of the abortion clinics in black neighborhoods!"
Caught this today:
EVery day in the United States, 1,452 African-American children are violently executed...before they're ever born. The "Say-So" March is designed to draw annual attention to this shocking reality.
