Lil Wayne vs. Langston Hughes

Weezy F. Baby ...
To you foreva from me to you
I heard somebody say church, I'ma need a suit
I'ma need a coupe, I won't need a roof
Flyer than Beetle Juice Beetle Juice Beetle Juice
I got the floor I'm tryna see the roof
Didn't wear a bulletproof so I got shot and you can see the proof
Blind eyes can look at me and see the truth
Wonder if Stevie do
But I'm a leave it to God not Beaver neither U
Cause I'm a murder Y kill O and even U
Man I got summer hating on me cause I'm hotter than the Sun
Got Spring hating on me cause I ain't neva sprung
Winter hating on me cause I'm colder than ya'll
And I will neva I will neva I will neva fall
I'm being hated by the seasons
So fuck ya'll who hating for no reason

Langston Hughes...
What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
Like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?

Langston's imagery is better.

Way, way better. Wayne is creative, but he doesn't paint a picture with words the way Hughes did in that poem. Plus, the deeper meaning of Hughes' poem makes it stand out to me.

Submission #1:
Why Lil Wayne Is A Pied Piper For The Ignorant

He brings up CHURCH.
Ah Church. The institution upon which Black folks congregated to PRAY for strength during slavery and plot our escape. We prayed for ENDURANCE during Jim Crow so that no THUG WHITE BOY would break down our door and drag our men out to their certain death. We PRAYED in the church during civil rights - for a forward marching vision so that our blood streaming from our heads would one day heal into scabs which form the basis of our FREEDOM AND JUSTICE for generations sight unseen.

Lil' Weezy saw CHURCH and he saw the need to DRESS UP in a SUIT when Jesus and Allah said COME AS YOU ARE. We want your SPIRIT and are not impressed by your MATERIAL garments.

These "nets" that we provide you will make you FISHERS OF MEN. Thus a utility truck to carry the net would be more appropriate than your DROP TOP.

High Caloric mumbo jumbo that typically peppers his songs.

But hell - at least it has a nice beat. With these inserts the Black females who dance to his music won't focus upon the assaults to their womanhood that so much of his music contains.

IF ONLY the same "mama" who saw her son Wayne Carter through school could guide her beloved son in the present time for he is offending the character of SOME OTHER MAMA'S SON.

If there was a Purple Heart distributed by the Hip Hop community - indeed "Dolla" would have been awarded one posthumously.

For a group of lyrical consumers who are so opposed to the death penalty some people sure indulge themselves with talk of VIOLENCE.

WHAT GOD does Mr Carter seek guidance from?
Maybe his God sends him out on "Crusades" as was the case with the Ottoman Empire? I would like to get to know "Weez's God"

Projecting GRANDIOSITY and GENUFLECTION rather than humility.

Unlike the others who walk the streets of New Orleans - he has a large contingent of bodyguards. This shows his financial might rather than his ability to escape a bullet that others on these dysfunctional streets are subjected to.

Have you ever seen the activist group:

Silence Is Violence?
Look at all of the residents who did not have a vest on:

Gentlemen. Please. Take my word for it.

That right there is better than anything Langston Hughes ever wrote.

I dig Langston, in an After School Special sort of way.

But he is the product of a time when black people thought being white like was progress.

Unfortunately many black people still do (won't say any names Constructive Feedback), and reflexively balk at unapologetic expressions of cats like Weezy F. Baby, who have made a generation of white kids think being black is progress.

But you don't hear me doe.

CF, your literal translation of "church" and "suit" should be declared criminal.

DV's quote: "That right there is better than anything Langston Hughes ever wrote."

DV, I appreciate what you are trying to do with this blog/post, but I respectfully disagree with this statement.

To compare Langston Hughes to Lil Wayne and declare Wayne victorious is a joke.

I do believe there are similarities, but Hughes's impact is one of the reason we can even have a Lil Wayne. Not the other way around.

I grew up on Langston Hughes and I rock Lil Wayne. I love both, but my life wouldn't be much different if there was no Wayne. It would certainly be different if Hughes didn't ball up in Harlem in the 20's.

You can put Wayne up against other poets and call him the winner, but not Hughes. That's a premature fight. Sorry.

Peace,

la

Yeah, you are probably right DV.

I don't translate gibberish too well.

I am sure that when he talked about the bullet and the bullet proof vest he was symbolizing the angry attempts of the White police officers who were mad at him for screwing the female with the badge in the "Mrs Officer" song that he made.

Denmark Vesey said...

"when he talked about the bullet" CF

How anti-intellectual can you get?

He doesn't "talk" about a bullet bra, no more than Langston was talking about a raisin.

words are symbols.

Again, you resent that which you don't understand.

You'd like to think of yourself as superior to D'Wayne Carter because you have "more education" (sanction from the Plantation) than does he.

Therefor you make these public interpretations you are not qualified to make.

You have no swag.

Funny thing is you wouldn't dare attempt an interpretation of the white boy Tom Sleigh. Nah. You stay in your place then.

But let a young brother from the streets of New Orleans turn a line and you become The Poetry Police.

Implying the brother is somehow more "responsible" for black violence than you are ... is indicative of some dangerous Negro SCAPEGOAT shit.

Personally, I think conformist handkerchief head Negros who spent the past 30 years begging for Affirmative Action, devoted to Democrats and indirectly supporting a For-Profit prison system are more responsible for the pathology in the black community than any damn rappers.

Those problems began before these cats were born.

Or better yet. I'll let Lil Wayne tell you:

"Man I got summer hating on me cause I'm hotter than the Sun
Got Spring hating on me cause I ain't neva sprung
Winter hating on me cause I'm colder than ya'll
And I will neva I will neva I will neva fall
I'm being hated by the seasons
So fuck ya'll who hating for no reason"

I feel ya La. Good points.

But I'll bet you a vegetable sandwich that in 50 years your grandchildren will be paying homage to D'Wayne Carter with equal amounts of reverence you demonstrate for brother Hughes who was here 50 years ago.

Big Man said...

Don't people say "Church" as a way of saying "I agree with what you're saying homie."

I thought that was the reference he was making, and he just flipped it to an actual church record.

Rap doesn't make sense if you don't understand the cultural references.

You riding with Wayne a little too hard.

For my money

Common
Jigga
Andre 3K
Ice Cube
Pac
Biggie
Cee-Lo
Nas

And several other rappers are not only better than Wayne now, but have had more of a cultural impact than he has ever had.

If we gonna post lyrics, I can go get some Andre 3K and we can see who really talking about something.

Matter fact, why don't you post the lyrics to Hollywood Divorce and see who ate who up on that track.

T.H.A.N.K. Y.O.U.

And there the Gentle Big Man reveals the ugly truth.

Raper Haters are not well educated enough to appreciate rap (poetry) ... and are too embarrassed to admit it.

Therefor they attempt to discredit the entire genre by laying complex social pathology at the feet of it's practitioners.

Wayne

Common is a nice guy ... but come on.

DV, maybe you're right.

I would bet it would be Pac or Biggie.
Maybe Jay Z, Nas or Snoop.

At a family gathering, I noticed that my preteen cousin was rockin' an Easy E shirt like he was CHE. So anything is possible I suppose.

Random ?: I respect your not eating meat (vegetable sandwich) How are you able to get enough protein with that diet?

All suck.
I read better random amateur shit on the net or bathroom stalls all the time.

Sure you do Byrdeye.

That's why you were able to employ your considerable literary skills on Submariner.

Being from an earlier generation - Weezy just ain't me.
But reading him, he makes more sense than while listening.
(All I ever hear are couplets - not peotry).
But I still can't give him the G.O.A.T.

Calling Wayne the greatest of all time is like saying Lebron is the greatest of all-time.

Gotta get your history up.

Wayne is and Lebron is about to be.

Gotta let go your grip on sentimentality.

Lol

Man, Wayne ain't better than Jigga, Nas, Andre 3K, Pac or Biggie.

It's arguable whether he's better than TI.

You a funny cat DV.

I can't think of a phrase to accurately describe how much I appreciate having read this debate. It reminds me of a friendly discussion I had with a student of mine who stopped by my classroom at lunch to tell me that Ace Hood was the best rapper alive... I could go in for three hours off that statement alone, but I can appreciate his passion in some weird way. The truth of the matter is that truth is relative. We could ride for our favorite lyricists and quote some deep shit to back up our arguments, but that doesn't necessarily make someone else's truth coincide with ours. I do feel there remains within our society a "white is right" sentiment that we often use to evaluate what we (dis)like. That, I can never dig. I love that someone had the balls to compare Lil Wayne to someone who is widely considered a staple in black expression for the ages. I think my favorite lyricist, Joe Budden sums up what I'm trying to say: "When the new generation thinks of Jordan, all they think about is when Iverson crossed him." My Jordan heads couldn't swallow that if you threw it in a blender w/ ice cream, but those who didn't grow up watching MJ could give a damn. As a teacher/coach, I often get a glimpse into the future through the opinions and preferences of my students. I mention that to say this: If ya'll think comparing Weezy to Langston Hughes is bogus, you might as well leave the country before it's too late...
