The boars were first bred by Sardinian breeders in the 1970's, working for the wealthy American meat packer Mason Verger. Verger was a former child molester, rendered quadriplegic and disfigured by his former psychiatrist, Doctor Hannibal Lecter. Verger's purpose for the breeding was to avenge himself upon Lecter by creating an aggressive breed of pig that wouldn't shy away from consuming living human meat.
Supplied with breeding stock by Verger, the Sardinian breeders cross bred a variety of different species and breeds to create an animal of desired size and temperament. For size, the giant forest hog of Central Africa was used. The forest hogs were then mated to European wild boars, a species selected for its ferocity and dietary adaptability. The resulting hybrids were mated to various other breeds selected for aggression and reproductive rate till after numerous generations and seven years later, the desired result was finally achieved.
Though originally fed human corpses, roused by pre-recorded screams, the pigs proved their worth by killing and eating their first victim, a film maker hired to show their training to Verger. The boars were transported to the USA and kept hidden until their captors finally caught and imprisoned Lecter.
Unfortunately for Verger, his vengeance was cut short by the timely intervention of FBI agent Clarice Starling. In the resulting fire fight, the Sardinians were killed while Lecter escaped, leaving the boars to devour their former masters. Their ultimate fate remains unknown.
