"I'd pay good money to see that."

And that my friend - is what Fiddy, and Jay and Big and Nas and Lil Wayne have been selling 'for good money' for years.

But naaaaaaahhhhhh ... Not until white boys like David Simon and George Pelecanos stamp their names on it and throw it on HBO do mainstream Negros (Casper) revel in the rapture of street mythology.

Ya'll cats remind me of kids who won't eat fruit - but will drink fruit flavored Snapple.

I think you have a legitimate objection but not for the reason you describe. Menace II Society and Dead Presidents by the Hughes brothers are classics that have very few peers. The problem is that because of self and outwardly imposed restrictions black artistic production has a narrow range. The focus is on vicarious thrill seeking and id release. Explorations of the deeper sort tend to be obscured. I doubt any of the persons that you listed could even conceive of an Omar.

Again, I would be quite impressed if Jay Z did a Jay Gatsby inspired semi-autobiographical movie or song. But instead of focusing on melodramatic romance, talk about a calcified white power structure. Though it might not get much traction from the suburban and rural fan base that he depends on.

Speaking for myself, my love for The Wire had nothing to do with its white imprimatur. The writing was incredible. Just think about how it ended with Marlo turning his nose down at a chance for legitimacy while a couple of seasons earlier Stringer Bell struggled valiantly in a losing quest for the same achievement. I could go on and on, but hopefully you see my point.

Sub

Wasn't Jay's American Gangster album the type of production you were looking for?
