"Stop Snitching”. Hip Hop Nonsense or Revolutionary Cry To Resist The Police State?
'WRONG MAN' FREE AFTER 19 YRS. REAL 'KILLER' WAS STAR WITNESS
A man who served 19 years in prison for the rape and murder of his girlfriend's children was set free yesterday after DNA evidence proved that a next-door neighbor - the star prosecution witness - was responsible for the heinous crime.
Walking out of the same New Jersey courthouse where he had
"I want to thank the lord. I want to thank my lord and savior Jesus for keeping me here," he said through tears as he stood beneath the word "Justice" inscribed in Latin on the facade of the Union County Courthouse. "I'm just thankful."

I may have my wrongfully accused and incarcerated mixed up, but I think this is the man who was accused of killing his girlfriend's children. And the girlfriend said even after 20 plus years she never thought he did it.
Yes Robyn, you are right. The issues do overlap a bit here. However, we may need to create a separate category: "Unnecessarily Incarcerated:".
The 300% increase in the numbers of incarcerated men is not the product of increased criminal activity. It is the product of an ever expanding definition of "crime", that has spread like a net and pulled thousands of men and women into the For-Profit Prison industry, while reeking havoc on communities and families.
One of the tactics (marketing efforts) of the Justice System / Prison Industry is to force people to testify against one another, by offering criminals deals to testify (snitch) against other people.
The net result is more convictions and more people incarcerated.
The "Stop Snitching" campaign is a legitimate political attempt to combat a practice of the "Justice System" that is not in the interest of the people it is supposed to be serving.
Take note to how it was summarily dismissed (Cam'ron interview) by an unsympathetic media (60 minutes), and how many black people jumped on the bandwagon by responding with disdain.
oops, didnt read the main post carefully, in a hurry, says very clearly the facts of this man's case. My bad.
The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.

How does bearing false witness equate to "snitching"?
If a black man murders someone, is dealing crack, robbing little old ladies, pimping women, etc. that black man is a criminal. My question is why would you vilify the people living in such a neighborhood for turning him in?
You confuse criminal behavior with blackness. Which I find offensive.
The police created the stop snitching meme.
At least they were one of the first groups to popularize it.
Doesn't matter who created it, now it's being perpetuated and popularized by certain hip-hop stars and pro-athletes (and promoted as "revolutionary" here). It's just who you feel more loyalty to--your grandmother who is afraid to come out of her house, or some crack-dealer.
I find it funny that everyone is concerned about someone who is DOING CRIME going to jail, while ridiculing the young brothers trying to do what's right. Is it any wonder as a group we are still near the bottom of the socio-economic ladder? Have infant mortality rates and other markers of health closer to the "third" world. If you want to listen to the Pied Piper, that's on you. No matter what pressures one has in his life, crime is a choice. I don't care how many "babies he's got to feed", if I see someone selling crack to a 8th grader, I'm dialing the police, and pointing him out. Call me what you want.
