Brittany. MTV. Kanye (From September 2007)

E'rybody Gotta Be A Stripper.

Shouldn't this woman be somewhere breast feedin'?

Oh! That's right. Don't take MTV to task or Viacom. Attack black rappers but NEVER challenge the corporate Massa.

Kanye: MTV Exploited Britney for Ratings

NEW YORK (AP) — Kanye West blames MTV for Britney Spears' less than stellar performance at the Video Music Awards. "Man, they were just trying to get ratings, and they knew she wasn't ready and they exploited her," the 29-year-old rapper said Tuesday on Sirius Satellite Radio's "The Morning Mash Up."

The network made a "bad move" by having the troubled pop star open Sunday's event in Las Vegas, said West, who feels he should have kicked off the show with "Stronger," the first single from his new album, "Graduation."

"They exploited her, they played me and I really don't mess with MTV," he said.

Notice that increasingly it is only Hip Hop stars have the nerve to speak the truth. Plantation Negros run to Congress.

Kanye needs to close his mouth. There is truth and then there is whining. MTV may very well have used Britney, but Kanye only cares because he didnt win an award and didnt get to perform on the big stage.

I hate to break it to you Kanye, but people, all people, were more interested in seeing Brittany than seeing you. Thus she, not you, opens the show. That aint racism, thats current events.

Sit down!

Robyn,

I like Kanye's statement. Right or wrong he is one of the few black men ... no, he is one of the few men, who dares challenge corporate media.

If we held Viacom (Murray Rothstein) to the same standards we held Fiddy Cent (Curtis Jackson) it would be a different planet.

Kanye aint afraid of Massa. Most Negros still are.

but again he's only challengng them because he didn't get the biggest toy.

he could care less about brittany and her being exploited.

which, by the way, is important.

intention.

But DV. I liken Kanye to Al Sharpton in a way. When you whine about every damn thing (Kanye) or claim everything is racist (Sharpton), you lose credibility.

A Blank man throwing a tantrum because Massa didnt give him an award aint empowerment. Thats beggin at its height.

A "Black" man.....

It appears as though Kanye only makes music and videos to get awards and recognition.

hmmmm....

a strategy which doesn't typically work.

OK.

That's one to look at it. Here's another.

1) Kanye is brilliant. He doesn't give a shit about the award. He wants the publicity surrounding the award to sell his product. So he steals the attention. He hijacks the media by making that statement. Who really won the award that year? Who cares. Kanye is a hustler.

On top of that he was right. He told the truth. His shit was on fire that year. His product was both commercially successful and ARTISTICALLY ahead of it's time.
He did deserve the award. Many people gave him props for claiming what was rightfully his.

2) Who else publicly challenges corporate media? Yeah, you got Negros lining up to make statements about Fiddy, and Nas and Jay-Z "Gangsta Rap".

But notice how few of the same Negros ever let the words "Viacom" or "Universal" or "Murray Rothstein" or "Rupert Murdoch" come out of their mouths.

Kanye is calling MTV out. We should give as least as much support as we give people who call out Akon.

DV, I'd be more inclined to see Kanye from your persepctive if none of the following were true:

1) this current tyraid is one in a long line of tyraids similarly focused on some symbol of praise or prestige issued by the white media. (Didnt he whine before that he didnt win an American Music Award).

2) He is not villianized by the mass media in the manner that 50 Cent, Camron, et al. are. You'd be hard pressed to identify a black male rapper that gets more shine on MTV et al. than Kanye. There is no basis for his indignation. He is one of the few who gets time on MTV!

and clearly he don't need no co-signers.

he's a hustler.

Anonymous said...

and I thought of something else....

3) Its not like he was bumped for Garth Brooks. Its Brittney Spears. Currently, she is among the largest, if not the largest, figure in main stream media. Kanye does well, but Britney is plainly bigger (even if it is undeserved).

Hell, I watched to see whether Britney would tear it up or crash and burn. I wasnt really checkin' for Kanye.

DV, "Who else publicly challenges corporate media?"

So why didn't you give the same support and praise to the Spelman sisters that started the letter writing campaign to Viacom?

I've got to agree with Robyn. Sure, bad press is better than no press so Kanye knocks on MTV because he didn't get an award, but it's too bad he can't be more like Barry Bonds, who challenges the media by telling them to f themselves at every turn.

Pd, do you think it's publicly challenging to beg someone to be nicer to you?

i think they are challenging the false idea that black women wholesale are okay with the images that are portrayed of them.

It is important that they know. and if we don;t tell them, who will?

whether they listen or not is not the point.

II, here is an excerpt from the letter, "I am disgusted with images of Black women in the media, particularly those provided by television and music videos. I can no longer tolerate the way women are portrayed and the disgusting way that BET perpetuates this behavior.

“I will never understand how a company that is supposed to be the voice for Black people, makes them look worse than any other organization in the world. Some of the videos that are played at BET can be classified as pornographic. The lyrics to the songs, with these outrageous videos, are just as alarming. Black women are all depicted as nothing but sexual objects and their only value stemming from various parts of their bodies.”

IMO I really don't think they are begging someone to be nicer to them.

Kanye should just stop whining.

Yeah you right about that Robyn. Brittany did sell 50 million records. She deserved the top spot.

However, she was obviously unprepared. The performance was disastrourous. It hurt her career. Kanye seems to be saying, MTV knew that. But knew a bad performance was just as good for them as a bad performance.

Fiddy was on the radio this morning. (Damn near every station. Boy hustlin')

He said "feel for Brittany because the media builds you up as a preparation for your downfall. Tearing people down is today's entertainment for the masses. But they aint gonna never get me."

America needs that kind of black male energy. "Mutha&$& aint gonna get me." That's what I teach my sons.

Anonymous said...

Agreed DV. But note the difference between what 50 said and what Kanye whined...

50: who apparently wasnt asked to perform at all..."yall aint never gonna get me."

Kanye: No fair, I should have opened the show, I'm better than Britney, it must be because I'm black (and couldnt be because the whole damn world was interested in seeing britney and whether her act was good or bad people are still interested in seeing her).

Like I said, sit yo' ass down Kanye!

You can say it... But so did Malcom, Marcus, Martin & Vick!

Old money over fame money any day!

OK Casper,

Have it your way.

"Dey gonna get me"

I don't know how we can say Kanye isn't a plantation Negro. Isn't he the one that made some comments about the hood loving mules, or mixed race girls, because of their skin and hair? (I think it was vibe mag) Didn't he make a video kissing nasty ass Pam Anderson and try to make it seem like black women (i.e Tracy Ross)were upset with him choosing a white woman? Isn't he the one that made black women look like a fool by making them look like golddigging whores....please kanye is not the champion against massa...especially with his ligh bright damn near white girlfriend

Anonymous said...

anon - i think the point of the video w/pam anderson was to riff old blaxploitation films, not make a statement that pink toes are "better". Notice the milieu of the video.

There is no such thing as "enough" for Kanye. he has to be front and center, top billing every year. If he was humble and allowed others to crown him more often he'd be better off. 50 is secure enough to allow MTV to do as they wish without whining b/c as he says, he's laughing all the way to the bank while Kanye needs outsiders to define his success.

Kanye is an amazing talent w/demons like the rest of us. You hear him talk about the inner struggle in his songs now. Peep "Big Brother" on the new album.

"riff old blaxploitation films, not make a statement that pink toes are "better"."

And old blaxploitation films WERE all about Black male fantasies worshipping White (over Black) women.
