No punishment for an adult that gets off on torturing animals.

Skip "an adult that gets off on torturing animals."

According to whom?

Funny how Neo-Liberal, anti-corporate members of the Technocracy sect suddenly have so much faith in accusations of government prosecutors.

The prospect of lynching a young brother for some Feel Good "I Love Dogs More Than People" bullshit.

The same people licking dogs in the mouth and buying them organic food support the war in Iraq that has led to the deaths of over 600,000 human beings.

As these dog loving "humanists" sleep tonight, cows and chickens and hogs are having their heads snatched off and their intestines ripped from their bodies by machines ... just in time for the dog lover's breakfast.

Hypocrits just need someone to blame for their own shit.

he should get help.

Very good and resonating comment Jasai.

You may as well give up on linking issues that are not linked Denmark.

1. You know nothing about Technocracy, nor do you care to know, but are using that concept as an attacking device now. Technocracy is not related to dog fighting for money.

2. This guy is not going to get lynched.

3.Two wrongs do not make a right.

4.Turning the word 'humanist' into a dirty word seems odd. A humanist is pro human, as opposed to anti-human.

5.The word humane, as in humane society, is not some odd ball sect, but people that feel obliged to protect innocent animals from people that turn them into killing machines for their pleasure and money making aspects.

Two points/questions?

1. Was Jasai talking about Michael Vick or Skip Seivert?

2. DV: "The same people licking dogs in the mouth and buying them organic food....."

LMAO! I can see it all now. I feel safe in saying this is something I, as a Black person, will never understand.

Well, i can't speak on Skip, but I felt like Vick needed to seek help before all this dog stuff. . .

but i would like to know who jasai was referring to.

Totally co-sign DV. I'm not saying fighting dogs is right. But the fact that the Feds have a friggin team out to convict Vick and his friends seems out place. The Feds have nothing better to do? And I am a dog lover, got two of them.

Is it being suggested that because humans buy meat and chicken from the grocery store they are hypocrites and as guilty as Vicks who tortured, starved and killed dogs?........ ( assuming he is guilty)

Changing the way livestock is processed into meat is a very different battle/issue, one that is being fought by many people. However comparing a cruel dog fighter to a meat eater is somewhat baffling to me.

Good question Anonymous. You need a nickname.

The dog fighter is probably more humane.

Most people have little idea how the animals they eat are bred, raised, slaughtered and processed into meat.

I submit that any casual glance at the million or so animals per day slaughtered in factories and fed to obese Americans would support the argument that dogs bred to fight are treated much more humanely.

300 million animals a year slaughtered in factories

vs.

300 dogs a year killed fighting.

Which is less humane?

Why is Vick the poster child for inhumanity?

DV, we are in agreement about the the less than perfect state of livestock processing. But unless you are advocating that everyone becomes a vegetarian, animals will be killed for food.

One of our basic needs is sustenance (food, water) perhaps this the most basic of our needs.... meat is food.

Dog fighting as entertainement is not a basic need.... its an inhumane pastime.
Vick a public figure is not the poster child for inhumanity, at least not in the minds of thinking people, however he has involved himself in some inhumane activities.
At the end of the day, all this Vick hullaballoo will die down, and someone else will take his place.

Hey Accra,

thought that was you.

Nah, no problem with animals being killed for food. And no, I am not advocating everyone become vegetarians. High quality, organic vegetables are hard enough to get now, without the fast-food eaters competing for the best stuff.

I have a problem with the exercise of situational ethics by non-thinking American conformists who allow their opinions to be shaped by the corporate media.

The Michael Vick hysteria distracts Americans from a war they are FUNDING with their tax dollars. This war kills far more innocent human beings in a day than all the dogs killed fighting in a year.

Most annoyingly, a Manufactured Media Villain like Vick allows Americans to VENT their self-righteous indignation at an easy celebrity target while HYPOCRITICALLY ignoring their own involvement in inhumane acts and death.

Meat for the food chain? Cool. Meat is "needed"? Not really.

Most people eat far too much meat. Over 50% of Americans are chronically obese. Just like those dogs who are fighting for sport, many people EAT for sport.

The animals that have their bodies destroyed in factories and life ripped from their bodies by machines are treated no more humanely than a fighting dog.

He among you who has not sinned, cast the first stone.

A nation of obese meat eaters and warmongers sending Michael Vick to jail for a remote connection to dog fighting would be the epitome of hypocrisy.

DV, your argument is sound in that it exposes the hypocrisy, racism, ignorance et. etc. associated with and in the application of justice.
This kind of argument can be applied to very many issues both within the US and as well as the international level. For example, On what moral authority does a nation that possesses nuclear power prevent another nation from developing nuclear power ?

However, the inequity and hypocrisy that exists in the US and else where does not negate the fact that it is important to have laws against animal cruelty. Laws that should address all the various issues of animal cruelty, including the slaughter of livestock, harvesting of fur etc.

Anyone who is foung guilty of breaking these laws should pay the penalty, including Vick.

Agreed Accra... The real issue with Vick is not whether dog fighting (illegal) vs. animal's used for food (legal) is worthy of to be classified as a crime. The real issue in this situationis ...If he is involved or had knowledge why would he put his career at risk. Let's debate that... For that is the real debate? Additionally, the motivation for dog fighting is illegal betting... which is also against the law.

Anonymous said...

It boggles the mind why he would put his career at risk...... could it be the money from the betting? Or perhaps some primal need to see animals tear each other to bits? I wonder.... and he is such a good looking man..

I watched Vick's public apology with my little son who USED TO wear Michael Vick jerseys to school. It is disturbing to think a certain percentage of the population is honestly going to be swayed by Michael Vick's "enlightenment" carefully crafted by his overpaid attorneys. Call me a cynic, but I don't believe a man who has been allegedly torturing animals since childhood coincidentally has a religious epiphany as a result of getting caught and losing his job. I hope I am wrong.

If there is anything good about the Michael Vick story, it is that there is an emerging increased awareness about animal cruelty and animal fighting. There is so much anger about this issue. If we channel it into a positive direction, hopefully, something good can come of it. However...

I think it is a sad commentary that we, as a culture, are using the Vick story to compare "What's worse?" "What's worse", we ask, "carelessly fathering illegitimate children, or dogfighting?". "Dogfighting or gambling?" "Dogfighting or rape?" "Dogfighting or racism?" "Dogfighting or hateful nationalism?" "Dogfighting or (fill in the blank)....?" The comparisons to dogfighting have been endless.

Dogfighting is one more piece of evidence our country is in need of a spiritual transformation (please note I said spiritual and not necessarily religious). Animals are sentient beings - they feel pain, and they suffer, just like we do. They are not more important, or less important than human beings, but like human beings, they are important, too.

Dogfighting pits one dog against another until one of them dies. The survivor gets his flesh torn off, ears ripped off, eyes pulled out, etc., and the reward for being "a winner" is to writhe in pain until the next fight. Enough said. The pictures make my flesh crawl. The losers are tortured, beaten, starved, electrocuted or drowned. For what? Because these poor creatures were unlucky enough to be born a dog!

Every major faith teaches its followers to be responsible stewards of animals and the Earth. Please help us get the word out that caring for animals, just like caring for people, is an important part of just being a decent person and citizen. If we make this a priority, there will be no more dogfighting horror stories, and no more pointless comparisons of evils. Let us all rise, together, to be better people than we are today, shall we?
