De La Hoya v Mayweather - Smart Money?

Floyd is not winning any popularity contests on HBO's 24/7. However, I believe he will kick Oscar's ass Saturday Night. Blind speed. Maybe the fastest fighter of all time. And that's saying something.

Bets? Predictions? Don't wait until Monday to lay your cards flat.

MAYWEATHER all day baby! Oscar dont want none.

I think it'll be a great fight. Unlike Gatti, De La Hoya is a boxer not a brawler, he's got ring experience against legendary fighters and a weight advantage but Pretty Boy Floyd is going to whup up on Oscar because of the aforementioned speed. If Oscar couldn't handle Sugar Shane, how is he going to handle Floyd?

Additionally, boxing is the sport where desire or lack therof shows itself most glaringly. Besides showing that Floyd Jr. is Mr. Flamboyant 2007 it also shows how settled into his nonboxing life Oscar is.Floyd's going to want it a little more.

Damn Damien. Excellent analysis. You should on ESPN spittin' like that.

I'm a Floyd fan. But I'm not going to lie. I'm a bit worried. Looks like he is trying too hard when the camera is around. Hope he is not distracted.

Oh. Let us not forget what Hopkins did to De La Hoya. Destroyed him with a body punch.

Mayweather is a little cocky on TV, but as you both have said, he CLEARLY wants it more than De La Hoya. Plus, dont think pops hasnt spilled the beans on all of De La Hoya's weaknesses!

This weekend is going to be fun-filled!

On another note, we've talked ad nauseum about how ignorant rappers are.....anyone peeped Roger Mayweather!? Lord have mercy!

Roger and Floyd Sr. sound as if they both have had a few too many rounds. It's crazy how brain injury is just kind of accepted in boxing as a part of the business. Peep how Freddie Roach mentioned how he had Parkinsons, the disease that has quieted Muhammad Ali.

I don't think Floyd is distracted, so much as he's like a kid on Christmas eve waiting to open his presents (ie biggest payday in career/career defining fight), he's just too damn obnoxious. That was cold the way he treated his sparring partner.

Odd that this fight has yet to develop any racial undertones. None of that Black v Mexican hysteria that bubbled beneath the surface when Vargas was fighting Shane.

I guess few people view Oscar as a Mexican. But it could certainly be a Establishment fighter vs. Rich Hip Hop baller. Mayweather is running with Fiddy of all people. That should garner enough hate interest to push the ratings over the top.

Yeah Roger and Floyd Sr. speak like they been drinking quaalude smoothies for breakfast.

Notice how Freddie Roach's speech impediment was framed as his heroic struggle with Parkinson's - yet the brothers were thrown under the bus and depicted as just ignorant, inarticulate Neanderthals.

They never once mentioned Roger Mayweather held a masters in English Lit. from Michigan St.

I was thinking the same thing about the race angle. It's strange that hasn't surfaced, hopefully is doesn't. Damn I never knew Roger has a masters in English. HBO has kind of played to the "outlaw Black" sterotype, and Floyd has helped to feed the frenzy, I think mostly by design. It'll be a whole lot of Latinos that pay to see Oscar do La Raza proud, and a whole lotta white boys will tune in to see that flashy Black boy get his comeuppance.

True. If Floyd, God Forbid, got knocked out - every red neck who has ever been cut from a basketball team or a football team because some "Flashy" brother took their spot - would be happy as a sissy in jail.

Nah D,

I was just playin' about the Masters Degree.

Aint no way in hell. ;-)

Great analysis DV and Damien! I've been all over the show, the portrayals, and the racial issue. Notwithstanding the absence of the race issue in the media, candidly, I'm a little nervous about what may come with a Mayweather victory. The beef is alive and well whether HBO knows it or not. I guarantee there will be backlash!

Oh, and I didnt say it, but I too would have been amazed if Roger had a Master's Degree.

Aint no damn way. LOL.

And, I think they see De La Hoya as Mexican. A pretty ass Mexican, but a Mexican nonetheless.

Mayweather is going to beat him to a pulp. After watching the HBO series, I'm sure everybody and their mama (that is not black) will be going for De La Hoya. Mayweather has really made himself out to be an egotistical ass. I don't really know what it takes to be a successful boxer (which may explain all the hype and shit talking by Mayweather)...but De La Hoya is clearly the more respectable person. It's a brutal, gladiator sport so I guess class and honor is not required or necessary.

I don't like either one of them, but I believe Mayweather will win the fight. Oscar can't box once a year and beat a fighter like Floyd.

Brother DV, Freddie Roch talks the way he does due to a disease called Pakinsons....what's the brothers excuse? Do you think they are not inarticulate???

Denmark Vesey said...

Well P,

Since all three men speak with impediments, and all 3 men were boxers for their entire lives, I would suspect the blows to the head caused each man to speak as if he had a mouth full of marbles.

Now, maybe no Dr. from Cedars Sinai has diagnosed the Mayweather brothers with Parkinson's - but Stevie Wonder can see their is medical dysfunction.

We may have to part ways here DV. Floyd Sr. and Roger Mayweather are freakin' ignant! To me, one doesnt have to deny this in order to argue that the media definitely portrayed the white dude as a hero.

Paul, one point has nothing to do with the other.

I think like all big fights that are trying to be sold a story is sold. Mayweather is playing the badguy role. As his own father said "I don't know that guy on t.v"

J said: Oscar can't box once a year and beat a fighter like Floyd.

Co-sign completely, Oscar can take a year off against Mayorga who comes straight at you and dares you to knock him out. Floyd is a classic boxer, hit and don't get hit.

Paul said:what's the brothers excuse? Do you think they are not inarticulate???

I think they are inarticulate, but as I alluded to earlier, brain damage is just a part of the business. I bet Floyd Sr. and Roger both have brain damage. That mushmouth speech is a glaring symptom, that's not just ebonics - that's too much boxing.

lol DV....ok I would love to give you the benefit of the doubt and I will. I just hope those brothers go and get diagnosed and get the best treatment that's offered.

And further more Robyn they are making him a hero for battling a severe disease not because he's articulate...

Damien, Paul, Robyn ...

Thank God for smart people.

I was startin' to feel lonely.

;-)

I got a 100 cool points on a Mayweather Unanimous Decision.
