Kobe. The Tiger Woods of basketball?

Anonymous said...
MVP Awards listed... Kobe who? Kobe is like Pippen he needs a great player next to him to win.

Multiple Winners
6 - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
5 - Michael Jordan
5 - Bill Russell
4 - Wilt Chamberlain
3 - Larry Bird
3 - Magic Johnson
3 - Moses Malone
2 - Tim Duncan
2 - Karl Malone
2 - Steve Nash
2 - Bob Pettit

*1999-00 - Shaquille O'Neal, Los Angeles Lakers

True. Gotta give it to you Anonymous.

All those cats won the MVP ... "vote".

But let us consider some less subjective criteria ... numbers.

How many of these MVP's have dropped 81?

How many have dropped 60?

How many have dropped 50 back to back to back to back?

For every Nash buzzer beater Kobe has 10.

For every Magic tight-short wearing loopty-loop look-away pass Kobe has a slashing dunk and 1.

Has Shaq hit 61 free throws in his life? Kobe hit 61 free throws in a row.

Shaq needs a 40 point superstar guard to win. The big untold secret: D'Wayne Wade played in Miami with Shaq, EXACTLY the way Kobe played in LA with Shaq.

HE HAD THE BALL. HE TOOK JUST AS MANY IF NOT MORE SHOTS THAN DID KOBE IN LA.

Shaq, when you go 38% from the line, the opposing team WANTS the ball in your hands.

Give Kobe a teammate 80% the player Pippen was and he will deliver a championship this year.

I feel you on North Carolina cuz. But I figured you for a Georgetown fan.

I'm glad UNC got beat, they should have never been there in the first place. But for Tim Floyd's brainlock during the entire second half of Friday's game, USC would have been playing the Hoyas. And Tyler "Psycho T" Hansborough is the most overhyped player in years, even for a white boy. He'll be Mark Madsen at the next level, trust me. Oh Yeah, Go Bruins.

If Kobe ever wins a championship without Shaq then maybe you have a point... Only Jordan has consistently won Championships without a legit center for his position and size... Review history... Even when Kobe won his rings Shaq was the MVP each year. The last 30 World Champ MVP's were. Wade(1),Duncan(2),Billups(1),O'Neal(3),Jordan(6),Olajuwon(2),I.Thomas(1),Dumars(1),Worthy(1),Magic(3),Bird(2),Kareem(1),M. Malone(1),Unseld(1),Walton(1) See the trend rebounding and defense wins Championships not 50 point scoring average any good GM knows that. This is not Golf or Tennis but team. That's why Jordan was the greatest!

Correction Duncan won 3... ;)

Championship = Championship

MVP = MVP

Many scrubs are walking around wearing championship rings.

He may or may not win another championship. That is really up to the trading block. The fact is my wife can hold Kwame Brown to 7 and 5.

Other than walk water, what more can Kobe do?

Kobe is the evolutionary extension and beneficiary of Jordan. Taller. Faster. More creative.

Kobe is the Jordan upgrade.

20 years from now, cats like you will be arguing that the New Cat Doing His Thing aint no Kobe.

LETS COMPARE...

Michael Jeffrey Jordan
Height: 6-6; Weight: 216 lbs.

Honors: Six-time NBA champion (1991-93, 1996-98); NBA MVP (1988, '91, '92, '96, '98); 10-time All-NBA First Team (1987-93, 1996-98); All-NBA Second Team (1985); Defensive Player of the Year (1988); Nine-time All-Defensive First Team (1988-93, 1996-98); Rookie of the Year (1985); 14-time All-Star; All-Star MVP (1988, '96, '98); One of 50 Greatest Players in NBA History (1996); Two-time Olympic gold medalist (1984, '92) NCAA Champion North Carolina Tarheels(1984).

NOTE:Jordan averaged 30.1 points for his career and 33.4 points during the playoffs and lead the league in steals twice.

Kobe Bryant
Height: 6-6 / 1,98
Weight: 220 lbs. / 99,8 kg.

He is a prolific scorer, averaging 24.4 points per game for his career, along with 4.5 assists, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game. He is known for his ability to create shots for himself, and is an adept outside shooter, sharing the single-game NBA record for three pointers made with twelve. Aside from this, he is also a standout defender having made the All-Defensive 1st or 2nd Team 6 of the last 7 seasons. He is deemed by many league executives as one of the most reliable clutch players in the league.

3-time NBA Champion: 2000, 2001, 2002
9-time NBA All-Star: 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007
2-time NBA All-Star Game MVP: 2002, 2007
8-time All-NBA Selection:
6-time All-Defensive Selection

NOTE: Kobe career average is 24.5 and his playoff average is 22.9. It goes down when it matters most. MVP steps up his game RIGHT?

Can you objectively say that Kobe is better or close. Did you even see Jordan play during his career. There is no comparison other than height ;)

nothing against white chicks, only against opportunist skanks and the silly, MARRIED, men-boys who fall for them.

Thats my point...(Points)... Should a great player be measured by how many points he can score. Kobe is not by far the leader in that category over his career but good. He has never won a scoring title with all of those scoring outburst. He is on a franchise that let's him dominate the ball because he sells tickets. But so did Mike Tyson. Many players have had incredible games, Wilt's 100 etc. and he won an MVP. Kobe's is in an era when overall scoring scoring is up (The Suns affect) where Jordan who has a higher career scoring average, rebounds, assist, steals, etc. by far played in an era when overall team scoring was down by 9 points. Last I checked there were 14 meaningful stats used to calculate overall player performance including wins. If you conclude that only points are relevant then you win the argument. If we agree that the MVP needs to be a leader in multiple categories at least on his own team and then the league to be MVP then we have a legit debate. Kobe is a taller A.I. in his prime and even A.I.'s career assist average is 3 per game higher then Kobe's WOW! Face it if I am selling sneakers Kobe is on my first team otherwise if I want to win Championships which is the goal I thought then give me Nash or Wade.

Anon
Peace Anon ;)

Exactly!

Anonymous said...

BTW... The Shaq lead Miami Heat have 12 Wins and 4 Losses and leaped to first place in their division since Wade got hurt. So I guess free throw % and 60 point games from one player is not that critical to winning. Who did Nash have on his squad last year when they beat Kobe? Stats don't lie ;)

Denmark Vesey said...

Great post anon.

Consider this. The purpose of basketball is TO score points.

No one, maybe in the history of the sport, does that better than Kobe Bryant.

Championships are an imperfect way to measure MOST VALUABLE player, because some teams are simply better than others.

Players today are better than players 20 years ago when MJ was doing his thing. Bigger, faster, better training, better technology global pool of athletes.

Were Nowitzky or Nash around 25 years ago, Bird would have been the third best white cat in the league.

Gerald Wilkens was called the "Jordan Stopper". He would be lucky to make an NBA team today.

People don't like Kobe because he's a prick and accused rapist. Period.

Nah. Not true.

99% of the people who don't "like" Kobe never met him. Therefor they don't know if he is a prick or the most genteel man on the planet.

All they "know" about him is the image spoon fed them by a media that knows how to push their buttons.

Rapist? Who really THINKS that girl, with the semen of two different men on her panties, was RAPED by Kobe Bryant.

I've checked into hotel rooms all around the world. Never once have I had the front desk clerk follow me to my room.

Hate sells.

Kobe is excellent at what he does. He does not kiss ass or clown. He is appropriately aloof. Were he a Dr. no one would notice.

Damn, Jasai. Even MLK fell for a couple of them. Don't mean he wasn't a great man.

Trust me, sometimes when a woman throws it at a brother, he needs the help of God to walk away.

1)
I am sorry but this is where we disagree. The purpose is to WIN. So if my son scores 50 points and his team loses then he did not win he lost and just had a good game.

2)
Kobe is currently 13th in regular season scoring average and number 26th playoff scoring average all-time. Not quite # 1 not even in the top 10

My $.02...

From ESPN:
==========
(Oscar) Robertson gained an upper hand in the rivalry in 1961-62, when he became the only player to average a triple-double (30.8 points, 12.5 rebounds and 11.4 assists) for a season.

That was before the three point line by the way. Kobe is good, I will give him his props. But greatest to ever done it talk? Nahhh.

I side with anon. Great points BTW.

DV: "Trust me, sometimes when a woman throws it at a brother, he needs the help of God to walk away."

Now THAT is factual. Preach.
