Jean-Baptiste Belley, Paris 1797

Jean-Baptiste Belley was a Senegalese born at Goree in 1747 and transported to Saint-Dominigue as a slave. "Brought as a child onto tyranny's soil," he declared, "through hard work and sweat I conquered liberty."
