This is similar to what happens when people wonder out loud if the Women’s movement hurts families...or like the gasps of “racism” you hear when Affirmative Action is questioned...similar to the backlash cultural conservatives get when they question the right of two dudes to live in holy matrimony. There are groups in this country that have become sacred. Furthermore, there has become an accepted way to think about them. Those whose “dominant” mores you can’t question (Jews, Women’s rights supporters, to some extent Blacks, and now Gays) are “protected classes". Even offering rigorous critique in the interest of a stronger society brings up guilt and shame because of our awful history and because the critiques are contrary to the paradigms for thought that emerged.
When, after WWII & the mass extermination, the US, Allies, etc. committed to the idea that Jews should have their own homeland, it was pretty much a closed case in the West. Our gov’t was dedicated to righting the Nazi wrong in the way they saw best. In our gov’t’s mind, not fixing Hitler’s wrongs would have been of the greatest neglects in human history...partially out of the guilt associated with the “Negro Problem” of the time. Dealing with the Jews was a twisted way to absolve the US of dealing with the real racial issue at home. As a result of the war and dedication to the Jewish homeland, speaking a counter-opinion related to that homeland required EXTREME care. When Thomas expressed her valid opinion (held by more people on this planet than the opposite), she failed to use that sensitivity.
Actually, now, to an extent, you can discuss Israel’s abuses and question their claim to the land if you do it in an intellectually rigorous and thoughtful way...you've seen president’s and intellectuals hack at it. Unfortunately for Thomas, she didn't show the requisite class and care with her candor.

Truth hurts! The way she wasn't scared to really question Presidents Bush and Obama in regards to this so-called "War on Terror" will truly be missed and is sorely needed...when she asked Obama at his first inaugural address about when he would bring the troops out of Afghanistan, she said, "...and don't give us any Bushisms about 'if we don't go to them there, they'll come to us here..."...classic. I think her "apology" for her remarks was forced upon her, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was from the same Pro-Zionist lobbyists and sympathizers who support the biggest terrorist country on the planet...Israel.
In "keeping in touch with the enemy", I have been reading Caroline Glick's blog as well...hundreds of negative comments regarding Thomas, all moderated by Glick herself of course. I argued, as I will be posting on my blog soon, that her comments while naive, came from a place of truth.
The modern problems began with the governments of the world deciding to take land from some folks and give it to another. It was a sanctioned strong arm robbery.
I call her comments naive because these Jewish folks have been on that land for years, and they are not just giving it back and going home. Thus saying "Go Home" is a tad idiotic. It's like telling your wife "Just act right." Any married person knows that ain't gonna cut it most of the time. A little for finesse and discretion is necessary.
I felt like this chick's comments not malicious, nor evil, nor heinous. They weren't particularly insightful, but I thought the reaction to them was ridiculous as everybody piled on her.
Moreover, I plan to compare the reaction to her comments about the reaction to comments about black folks, or even worse, the treatment and comments about Native Americans and wonder at the stark difference.
I was telling my homie that what happened to the Jews, while horrible, was by no means unique, and therefore there should not be unique rules of engagement for discussing that situation and their current behavior.
