Yeah, Jimmy and Bob had musical talent and verbal prowess. I bet they could probably rap Weezy under the table if put to a contest. Weezy possesses lyrical skills and is good at branding much like Too $hort was back in the day. But political prisoner and all that? I am not convinced.

LOL.

What you going for, understatement of the year?

That's really really funny.

Fact is Mahndisa. When Bob and Jimmi Hendrix were initially on the scene Average Negros weren't feeling them either.

They were called druggies and dismissed.

Hendrix played to a mainly white audience and did his thing in England.

Bob was thrown in jail by Jamaican Plantation Negros who HATED him. (Many Jamaican cops took it upon themselves to attack Rastas and forcibly cut their hair)

30 years later the same Negros riding these cats Johnson's like BART.

Today the same sheep like Negros, conditioned to resent cats they don't understand, attempt to dismiss and reduce one of the most creative and prolific recording artists in the history of the world ... because the same corny negro Thought Police don't get it.

Aint that some shit?

But you know how it is.

Not until some white boy writes a book, or some professor at NYU does a study ... or Time magazine does a cover story ... will Negros come around.

I think this same type of knee-jerk resistance and resentment of genuine black creativity is why we have been so uncreative politically as a people.

Come on.

40 years later Negros still talking "Civil Rights", "Affirmative Action" and voting Democrat.

This impulse to shoot down that which we don't understand, be it Freestyle Rap or Himilayan Pink salt, has done more damage to our people than racism and diabetes.

Big Man said...

That was funny KW.

By the way, "Stan" was a nasty song, that boy Em could flow back before all the BS.

Y'all silly for arguing with DV about Wayne. Homie done made up his mind and when y'all known DV to change his mind?

lol

Big Man said...

Oh, and I call BS on Jimmy.

Jimmy got his start playing with black R&B groups. That's where he honed his craft and actually made his name. Look it up. All of his record industry contacts came from the work he put in on the Chitlin tour, and black musicians hooking him up with folks. Black folks were looking out for Jimmy, supporting and giving him money when white folks could care less about him.

Now, when Jimmy decided to cross over to rock and roll, of course he had a mostly white following. Rock and roll was considered white folks music at the time, just like the blues and jazz was still considered black music.

Jimmy blew up playing rock and roll, no doubt, but to pretend that black folks didn't want to hear him is ludicrous. We listened when he was doing what black folks wanted to hear.

Besides, comparing them to Wayne is asinine.

Wayne is THE most popular rap star. Among blacks and whites. Hell, I live in New Orleans, 95 percent of the vehicles driven by young black people are blasting the lastest cut from Wayne. You can't escape him on the local radio. To say that Wayne isn't supported by the "average Negro" is just a fantasy concoted to make a false comparison.

If you wanna ride with Wayne, ride with Wayne.

But you ain't gotta lie to kick it. What's gon' be gon' be, you ain't gotta lie to me.

Denmark Vesey said...

"To say that Wayne isn't supported by the "average Negro" is just a fantasy concoted to make a false comparison." Big Man

Big Man. You an average Negro.

You don't support him.

Them cats blasting Wayne from their cars in New Orleans are NOT average Negros.

There usually a step ahead of average Negros.

Big Man said...

DV

I forgot to get your definition of average before I made my comment. Should have known better than to accept your words at face value, rookie mistake.

Besides, I don't have a personal grievance with Lil Wayne. As I've said before, I owned several of his albums and mixtapes and used to bump his stuff.

I don't listen now for the same reason I don't listen to rap in general.

Music about promiscuity, drug use and violence, no matter how artfully presented, doesn't appeal to me as much as I try to align myself with Christian tenets.

The two don't work for me. I can't listen and celebrate one thing six days a week, and then talk about Christ on day 7.

I'm not a fan of hypocrisy.

Big Man said...

Here's an interesting thing.

Denmark Vesey alleges that the majority of black folks are Plantation Negroes.

Yet, strangely, these Plantation Negroes, despite their large numbers, are not big fans of Lil Wayne?

Sadly, this is quite typical...

Denmark Vesey said...

"Music about promiscuity, drug use and violence" Big Man.

Big Man.

How can "music" ... be "about" anything?

Music is exactly that ... music.

Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew" wasn't "about" Bitches.

Claude Brown's "Manchild in The Promised Land" is not ... "about" a precocious little black boy running around Israel.

Music "about" shit is a lecture over a beat.

That's why it doesn't work.

Bourgeois Negros who think you understand rap because they used to bump Tribe back in the day and own a couple of mixtapes are sadly mistaken.

Art is more meaningful than the sum of its parts.

I submit that the unprecedented global reach of this particular artist speaks for itself.

I'm telling you this cats art is beyond anything you fully comprehend.

I read what you write.

I read what he writes.

I can see a difference.

So take my word for it.

Big Man said...

I had written a long response, but it got lost in the ether.

I'll just say this.

You are welcome to define Wayne and his work however you see fit. After all, this is your corner of the internet. I have no interest in taking your "word" for anything.

And, we weren't bumping Tribe down here, and least not when I was a youngin'.

Eightball + MJG, Scarface, Outkast, Cash Money, UGK, bounce, and a host of other local groups were what was hot when I was coming up. That Tribe stuff is what you up-north cats were riding with.

Big Man said...

Oh, and I'd rather listen to TI speak his mind than Wayne any time.

Denmark Vesey said...

Aight Aight Big Man.

Damn.

You stumbling all over the point dude.

This aint "about" listening to Lil Wayne.

It's about reinventing what we consider political.

I'm highlighting the tremendous political capital acquired by this cat and evaluating the visceral and disproportionate impulse to reduce minimize disparage and defame this cat by politically bankrupt Plantation Negros.

It's fascinating.

Aint nobody "tellin' you not to listen to TI".

Hell.

I think he's another example of an extremely potent political force.

He did a year in jail for a POLITICAL CRIME.

I submit ... Plantation Negros are incapable of appreciating the political dimension of imprisoning a wealthy young black man for purchasing a firearm.

They have been conditioned to obey laws they don't even think about.

The legitimacy of the law and subsequent imprisonment of a young black man does not even OCCUR to a Plantation Negro.

"Wules Iz Wules!"

Big Man said...

Actually, my point is I don't rock with Lil Wayne like you. I'm not as enamored with him as you are. In fact, when I was listening to rap, I far preferred TI to Wayne. And I'd rather listen to Andre 3000 over both of them.

That said, I don't have a problem with your idea that there is something wrong with Wayne being arrested for breaking the gun laws. As I said earlier, I don't like seeing black brothers go to jail unless they are the most heinous of criminals, which most of them are not.

If you think he's a "political prisoner" that's fine. If you want to convince others he's a political prisoner, have at it. As you've made clear, it's all about how you define "political prisoner."

My thoughts were on your point that failing to be a Wayne stan was evidence of a failure to appreciate greatness, or his position in society.

I disagree. I think TI has more to say, has handled his finances and career better (he's the equivalent of Baby and Slimm while Wayne is just an artist) and seems to think about the larger world around him more. Personal preference.

You like Wayne, and that's quite all right.

Denmark Vesey said...

"Actually, my point is I don't rock with Lil Wayne like you." Big Man

Big Man you don't rock a lot of things like me.

Which is why your discourse on this subject really hasn't transcended further than what "you like".

What "you like" is limited by what you see.

I see things you don't.

If you want to discuss those things I suggest you revist my comments regarding political capital, media and memes.

I am presenting a case that Lil Wayne has created a fabulously powerful political phenomenon.

Others are arguing that he has done no such thing, that he's just a rapper, won't last, not particularly signficant and that there is really not much to see.

As a framework to examine these two different contentions I've issued a challenge for someone to submit a link to ANYONE more politically potent than Lil Wayne.

Nothing of note has come back.

Just corny comments about fandom and your repeated declarations that your prefer TI.

I get your point Big Man.

I'm not impressed.

Please expand it. Develop it. Get beyond the personal.

Because as it stands now it's dumbing down the discourse.

DMG said...

OK, sure this is all a matter of opinion and different tastes. But don't you think you are riding Weezy's dick a little bit too hard when you put him up against Hendrix, and Marley?

He's alright. That's it.

Denmark Vesey said...

Actually D, I put him up against Marley and Hendrix to challenge the Plantation Negro Thought Police.

I submitted the example that Negros like you didn't dig and support Marley or Hendrix in their prime either.

That not until after The Plantation had begrudgingly endorsed them as artistic heavyweights did the bourgoise proletariat come around.

There's no reason to expect it differently regarding an artist like Wayne.

Great artists are rarely appreciated during their time.

Because great artists are normally ahead of their time.

So. Nah. Doc.

I just don't think you or Big Man are smart enough or have tastes in art developed enough to determine the relative merit of a once in a generation artist like Lil Wayne.

Gee Chee. Yeah. Kay Dub. Maybe.

They seemed interested in comparing apples.

Nah, what you actually said was:

They were called druggies and dismissed.

Which I pointed out was factually inaccurate. See my comments on Hendrix's beginnings and my note on Wayne's immense popularity. Make sure you connect that dot to regular comments that the majority of black folks in American are "Plantation Negroes" due to their diet, political thought process or feeling on "getting a chick."

You then said Today the same sheep like Negros, conditioned to resent cats they don't understand, attempt to dismiss and reduce one of the most creative and prolific recording artists in the history of the world ... because the same corny negro Thought Police don't get it.

Which, again, I pointed out was factually inaccurate as it relates to me and my thoughts on Lil Wayne and rappers in general. See my comments on what why I stopped listening to rap. To remind you, it wasn't about not "getting it" it was about which spirit I choose to feed.

Finally, if you don't think my artisitc tastes are up to par, that's quite all right.
If you think my responses don't merit a response from you, again, just fine.
If you feel my responses are in fact dumbing down the discourse, well, what can I say?

But, I would think that an intellectual giant of your caliber would at least reconstruct the argument correctly.

I don't know where you got that idea...who do you think turned ME on to Hendrix and Marley. My aunts and uncles.

"I just don't think you or Big Man are smart enough or have tastes in art developed enough to determine the relative merit of a once in a generation artist like Lil Wayne."

Your problem here is that you are blinded by the "MD" and the stereotype you have in your head. You actually have NO CLUE what I have in my music collection...which is far deeper and wider than anything anyone here has submitted. I'm not a Lil Wayne fan because he hasn't shown me anything that hasn't already been done before...in the last 5 years. Like I said, he's alright. You read alot into his lyrics (probably more than he reads into them himself). You are entitled to your opinion, but don't pretend you know what I know about music because I'm not "in the industry" or by some posts on your blog about hip hop...which you realize ISN'T the only form of music on the planet.

Really, I think today's hip hop is so formulaic and commercial that it's hardly worth listening to...Weezy included. The video's aren't innovative. If you want to talk about status quo, you need look no further than high airplay hip hop. You want to talk about old white men in a board room conspiring? High airplay hip hop. The more clownish, and stereotype reinforcing, the better. You want minstrel show? You need look no further than rap videos.

But again, you are entitled to your opinions.

Mahndisa S. Rigmaiden said...

Yeah as usual DV you are full of it. Big Man is right. My Daddy who is a Black man turned me on to Jimmy Hendrix as a kid. Screw the average plantation Negro meme. I think you call anyone who doesn't agree with your world view an average plantation Negro. And I am still astounded by your apparent love for lil Wayne. His lyrics are catchy and cute. But not deep, pensive or mind altering.

Jimmy's musicianship was MIND altering. Bob Marley called for expansion of consciousness ala Peter Tosh. Get up Stand up Fight. And lil Wayne? From what little I know of him, he glamorizes getting fucked up and he doesn't pay his creditors even though he can afford to do so...what else...He has how many kids by how many baby's mama's? At least Bob Marley had an open relationship with his WIFE and they raised All his kids together and with their mothers. I don't see Lil Wayne doing any of that.

I don't think of him as a revolutionary. A revolutionary is someone who makes waves of change and thinks outside of the box. I see lil Wayne as the personification of plantation negrodom. By your own rubrics no less.

1.Not married but has multiple children with multiple women
2.Conspicuous consumption and gaudiness via the bling
3.He does not read and does not seem to be interested in expanding his mental prowess.
4.Gimmickry does not a rapper make.

Lil Wayne is an artist. A character. His "bling" is part of his costume.

No different from Liberace, The Pope or Queen Elizabeth.

From It is What It is:

MB: "Wax must be the reincarnation of Joseph McCarthy and John Edgar Hoover. He sees communists everywhere."

HW: "I really like the McCarthy reference :) but you can keep Hoover. He was just a mid level manager for the "elite".... Many people bought into the "con" on McCarthy. McCarthy just luckily peeped the Secretary of State Dean Acheson (the highest ranking "elite" play maker and double agent at the time) playbook....He was an OK cat, nothing to write home about, but definitely not the villain that you read in your history book."

Mahndisa S. Rigmaiden said...

So communism is bad and that is why Lena Horne doesn't matter? She was more prolific, more intelligent and well spoken and took stands for her beliefs publicly. She is an artist that is far more compelling than Weezy.

And for someone who did a post on how their boy should read more, hanging up a quasi literate drug addict without common sense seems quite hypocritical. This is called cognitive disconnect of a fanatic. The fanatic only sees what he wants to see despite evidence to the contrary.

As to intellectual prowess and your nasty comment, am I talking to you, Dina, DMG or Cnulan? That was a childish insult that isn't consistent with your previous comments.

It's been fun making comments on your blog from time to time, but I think it's outlived its usefulness. Take Care and feel free to delete me from your blog roll.

DMG said...

Mahndisa,

"Your arrogance is astounding. I wonder if you are a fogue state of another poster here. Your overarching attitudes are too similar to discount."

1. Do you have access to my music collection?

No.

2. How often has anyone (other than KW) submitted much outside of the world of hip hop? There is some mindblowing innovative music that will never make it to American ears. Not saying it's better or worse. But how can one innovate without sampling something he/she's never heard before to spark new ideas? Whatever wallow in your "my rims, and my bitches". I'll listen to some cats from Lebanon get down on a L'oud.

3. I believe the word is Fugue. And since I recall who I am, and my background, I don't think this word means what you think it means.

4. So after reviewing the above, how can you call stating a fact "arrogant"?

I happen to like a WIDE variety of music that I've gathered from my travels and friends who are DJ's and musicians to just regular folks who have turned me on to some really fantastic music from quiet corners of the globe. But, whatever I like what I like, as MOTI seems to REALLY like Weezy and Drake. I think they are weak, but that's MY opinion, not his.

So, since we are actually kind of on the same side here, maybe you can well...I don't know...stfu? Since you can't seem to contribute without resurrecting some personal beef with me that I've long ago forgotten. You see, I'd actually have to CARE that you breath, and your heart beats to dislike you. I don't. Therefore I don't dislike you...I can't.

I don't know how you do it, but in one post you can get MOTI and me to pause and give you multiple cyber-backhands. You, my dear, are truly talented.

1. YOU WILL RECEIVE A BODY - You may love it or hate, but it will be yours for the duration of your life on Earth.

2. YOU WILL BE PRESENTED WITH LESSONS. - You are enrolled in a full time informal school called "life." Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons. You ...may like the lessons or hate them, but you have designed them as part of your curriculum.

3. THERE ARE NO MISTAKES, ONLY LESSONS. - Growth is a process of experimentation, a series of trials, errors and occasional victories. The failed experiments are as much a part of the process as the experiments that work.

4. LESSONS ARE REPEATED UNTIL LEARNED. - Lessons will be repeated to you in various forms until you have learned them. When you have learned them, you can then go on to the next lesson.

5. LEARNING DOES NOT END. - There is no part of life that does not contain lessons. If you are alive, there are lessons to be learned.

6. THERE IS NO BETTER THAN 'HERE'. - When your 'there' has become a 'here,' you will simply obtain a 'there' that will look better to you than your present 'here'.

7. OTHERS ARE ONLY MIRRORS OF YOU - You cannot love or hate something about another person unless it reflects something you love or hate about yourself.

8. WHAT YOU MAKE OF YOUR LIFE IS UP TO YOU. - You have all the tools and resources you need. What you do with them is up to you.

9. ALL YOUR ANSWERS LIE INSIDE YOU. - All you need to do is look, listen, and trust.

10. YOU WILL FORGET ALL THIS AT BIRTH. - You can remember it if you want by unraveling the double helix of inner knowing.

I'd compare his level of literacy and common sense to yours any day of the week.

I think bourgoise attitudes like yours towards cats like Weezy has done more damage to the development of our people than racism or "White Supremacy".

The Global System of Black Jealousy is a far more dangerous enemy.

So Mahndisa if after saying some nasty shit like that you find the need to play "victim" ... it might be time for you to step.

I rest assured knowing you've learned some good shit over the years.

And hell we need some new blood anyway.

I'm getting tired of force feeding memetic nourishment to the same old unappreciative Negros with their lips poked out.

Kay Dub!

You are a beautiful sister. Your positive nature and noble spirit are humbling.

Thank you for trying to chill things out.

Proud to have you here.

I just went back and read this whole exchange for a second time.

Call me crazy, but weren't we comparing the musical talents of three artists? Like I said, I don't think Weezy has earned a comparison to Hendrix or Marley...but that's beside the point. Just what does their personal lives have to do with the comparison?

So called "out of wedlock" births, and personal lives don't mean shit when we are comparing their talent. What's the difference if Marley had a "open marriage" or whatever that means and Weezy has a bunch of kids with different women. It's music, and entertainment. Why are folks so ready to volunteer musicians and athletes to be roll models? Fuck that. I don't need them to serominize to me, or tell me how to raise my kids...I just want them to play the damn music and let me enjoy it.

What the hell is a roll model anyway? I wish someone would point me out to their kids as a roll model and then get indignant when I do something they don't like. Fuck that. Take care of your own damn kids.

Who are the "Alpha males" in our society???

Politicians
Rappers
Movie Actors
Athletes

So what has been going down over the last 5 or so years???

These "Alpha males" gettin' locked up!!!

THEY ARE HAVING THEIR AUTONOMY MINIMIZED AND REVERTING TO A STATE OF ANTI-CAPITALIZATION...

They are being denied THE FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE IN THE 2nd...

They are being denied PERFORMANCE-ENHANCING technologies...

And their mistresses more wayward than ever...

These cats GOT OUR AUTONOMY in their hands AND ARE STRAIGHT LOSING IT...

That's the weezy...

Will he stand with heat in hand?

I don't usually engage you, because well I think you are an idiot, but let's put that aside for a moment.

You picked four groups of people who all have very brief "life" spans, and are all, for the most part entertainers. Let's put aside the 0.5-1% of these groups who defy the odds and have longer than usual careers.

Now just how are these men "alpha"? You think they wield power? You think they get to mate with the alpha females?

The real "alpha's" are the dudes who EMPLOY these dudes, and those who make things happen in the real world...not just in a rap video, movie screen or football field. I mean, when the police pulled over Weezy's tour bus I don't think he got taken to the backseat of that police car to get a blow job, now did he?

Real alpha's really eat first, and get whatever females they want. Long, long, long after the stars have faded from the group you named above.

And those dudes rarely get "locked" up.

No, what you described are the kings advisor, minstrel, court jester, and soldier. They might be be outwardly desirable, might get a little coin, and a few chicks...but they sure aren't alpha. Nobody's following Weezy anywhere outside of a concert. Nobody's following LeBron anywhere outside of a basketball court (especially after his last game...). Or maybe you are looking to LT to lead the pack?

Weezy? Famous, sure. But not an "alpha".

dmg,

Maybe I should have clarified for you???

These cats PLAY "Alpha" on TV...

They RUN PLAYS, follow SCRIPTS and act out MEMES.

And they are getting slapped down like never before.

In fact, black Alpha has been getting slapped down a lot lately to the detriment of all free men.

But don't trip, TD see the rise of "alpha" chick on the right-wing, too. Coulter, Palin, Arizona guv... White "Alphas" just handing over the reigns.

And devout dyke ascends.

DMG said...

Nah, dude Alpha males who are black aren't running around with grills doing stupid shit, then showing up to court like a chastised child...asking "why's everbody picking on me?".

And again, for White female alphas you choose entertainers...and a chick who fell into her position by default.

Even YOU can do better than that.

Thank you so much for your kind words. That was very touching, much love to you for that.

Its not nice seeing people who sometimes get along fallout, neither are sudden departures. I hope there's no lingering beef and in time y'all work it.

dmg,

Huh?

Is Barack Alpha?

Is Will Smith Alpha?

Is weezy Alpha?

Is dmg Alpha?

Who cares about how YOU DEFINE ALPHA, Alpha is being defined BY THOSE TRYING TO DEFINE IT.

Devout dyke is winning IN THE PUBLIC SQUARE and this has trickled down to the private sphere.

The prez has the chief justice in his bed.

Oh, and I can't remember Wayne dropping nothing like this.

Check out the other track on this same album where he raps about dying, going to heaven and then going to war with Satan.

TI is nasty.

When I first came to the US I hated Hip-Hop.

I started to like it because I wanted to fit in.

I didn't even understand the lyrics.

Then I was like fuck it. I really don't like it.

Years later I started to listen to political rappers. It is when I understood the meaning of Hip-Hop and I fell in love with it.

But I kinda' was not so much into rappers 'sold' to the system.

Sellouts.

Then I came to this blog.

And I understood.

Well brotha DV set tripp'n is the biggest factor I believe in the criticism Wayne receives. Remember how the Rockets got fronted on by Sports Illustrated after defeating the Knicks in '94? And that's with stats so imagine the east attitude when it comes to rap.

But whites are the biggest consumers of rap's exoticism. Could be why Wayne took cue from Pharrell and traded in a few chains for the rocker persona. Wouldn't be surprised if he comes out with a diamond studded skate board next go round. Talk'n 'bout "ice skate'n" or something. You know his word play.

But unlike Wayne, Hendrix's evolution was in his art not his demographic.

Yo, something very important was overlooked. KonWomyn posted a Jay Electronica track on here and nobody said anything about it. I love and respect Weezy, and I also "planteo" that Jay is more lyrical. Here's evidence that supports my cosign of KonWomyn's statement:

They may call this overkill is 39 US states, but fuck it. The difference between Weezy and Jay Electronica is just so clear. One makes you go "oooooooohhh" and the other leaves you speechless....
