It seems that some 33 year old white woman, Margaret Jones Seltzer, who really goes by the name “Peggy” and rocked the Pen Name “Margaret B. Jones” completely fabricated a memoir about how she grew up in a South Central Los Angeles foster home and ran drugs for the Bloods street gang since the age of 12.

I saw a piece of this story earlier in the week, but didnt catch the substance. I knew some claims of false literary content had to have been involved when they story included pictures of James Frey the author of Million Little Pieces who rode Oprah's Book Club to the bank and then back again.
As a non-writer, I dont understand the apparent hierarchy between fiction and non-fiction. Why do they have to lie? Do non-fiction authors make more money? Obviously, I havent read this chick's book, but in the case of James Frey, Million Little Pieces was a great book whether it was a work of fiction or not. He screwed himself unnecessarily, IMO.
This story is more significant to me because of its subtle social commentary. That chick (and sooo many others) want to "be black" so bad, they'll lie and cheat to do it. Frankly, its amazing and a testament.
