GOD BLESS UNDERCOVER BLACK MAN

David Mills, Television Writer and Producer, Dies

David Mills, an Emmy Award-winning writer and producer for crime dramas like “The Wire” on HBO and “Homicide: Life on the Streets” on NBC died on Tuesday in New Orleans, a press representative for HBO said. The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported that Mr. Mills died from a brain aneurysm; a statement from the cable channel was expected shortly. HBO is about to broadcast the debut of a new series, “Treme,” on which Mr. Mills worked as a writer and producer.

After Mr. Mills made his television writing debut with “Homicide,” which his friend, David Simon, helped to create, he wrote for “NYPD Blue” and “ER.” He was also a co-writer and co-producer on “The Corner,” adapted from Mr. Simon’s book about drug abuse and poverty in Baltimore, which won three Emmys. Mr. Mills also created the NBC series “Kingpin,” about a Mexican drug cartel, which was shown in 2003.

Before he wrote for television Mr. Mills was a journalist who gained national attention for a 1992 interview with the hip-hop performer Sister Souljah in The Washington Post, in which she said, “If black people kill black people every day, why not have a week and kill white people?” When the Rainbow Coalition later invited Sister Souljah to speak at its convention, the group was criticized by Bill Clinton, then a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, who cited Mr. Mills’s interview.

My first intro to this blog was a belated read of the Columbine shootings. UBM & DV took that thread and stitched a page into my bookmarks.

I was like, "This is the spot."

He died of a brain aneurysm, I don't know if anything could have been done to prevent this.

How do they know what caused his death? He just died last night. No time for an autopsy. 48 years old. He looks overweight. Do we really need CSI?

C'mon DeeVee - you know that you'll miss the battles.
Reading Mills v. Fish
Mills v. SeeNew
Or Mills v. DeeVee was always some clever and insightful ish.

More than the write ups in the Washington Post - you gotta know that the write up Mills is now getting here matters more.
It's like Ali telling Fraizer that he (Joe) is a great fighter.

(You gotta' know that Dave is looking down (or up?) laughing at his Cassandra-like comment earlier.)

I was hoping this was some sort of joke. I was really wishing this was just another way our host was poking fun...when I read this twice and didn't see a punchline...

Of all the times I've seen folks die, I still cannot get used to it. Death still shakes me up. Even when it's someone I've never met face to face.

Rest my man. I will miss you. We will miss you.

My condolences to all of you who have built an online relationship with UBM over the years or over the months. I have never had any direct interaction but still jolted by knowing of someone's presence before their forever absence. Death is real and is so close to us at any moment.

It is inevitable and when one takes time to imagine themselves as dead, it becomes terrifying.

The great sage al-Ghazali explains that whoever has two brothers absent, one brother's arrival is expected the next day when the other is expect in a year, preparations are made for the one on the morrow for preparation is occasioned when something is expected soon. Therefore, the heart of one who expects death soon, will be prevented from making haste to upright works indefinitely.

""He was an enormous talent," said David Simon, a co-executive producer with Mills who first met the award-winning writer in the newsroom of their college newspaper. "He loved words and he loved an argument but not in any angry or mean-spirited way. He loved to argue ideas. He delighted in it, and he was confident that something smarter and deeper always came from a good argument.""

Ahhh... chuchhh...

There are several causes of anuerysms and none of us know his full medical history to know the exact cause. Don't get me wrong, I'm feeling the whole be healthy vibe, that's truth, but Submariner said something over at Subrealism that put things into perspective as well:

"I don't know the man's personal medical history but I can tell you that an aneurysm is the result of a congenital defect in the wall of a blood vessel in the brain. It's asymptomatic until it leaks or ruptures. Last one I saw was a twentysomething slim healthy white female who was intubated and kept on life support until her organs were harvested. Dude could've been as fit as Lance Armstrong and still suffered the same fatality."

Sub, hope you don't mind me quoting you, but I just felt it was something for all of us to think about.

Even though I know UBM's really gone, I've read and blogged abt it, but I'm still holding out for one more,

"Lower your skirt, Denmark."

or sumthin like,
"I smell something burning, check your muffins Craig."

I will def miss his presence here - he brought sumthin different to the spot; the witty remarks and controversial opinions that cld get errybody worked up. The battles were legendary.

Y'got a maaad archive, DV.

RIP, Undercover. A'she.
