While I watched the show and found Marlo to be an interesting and at times amazing character, his lifestyle wasn't the model for anything I'd want my children to aspire to.
Marlo was a thug, who made a living selling people drugs. And killing folks.
But, as DV will surely note, Marlo was also tough-minded, take charge, ruthless, loyal and calculating. Small doses of some of those traits can make you hugely successful, while still being a good person.
Large doses turn you into a monster. You are trying to say that there is nothing good about Marlo. That's a mistake. DV is trying to gloss over the negative to accentuate the positive. The only reason I won't call that a mistake is because DV purposely does it to advance certain propaganda. He knows exactly what he's doing.
Better late than never...
Marlo was not art. Marlo was a snake--no soul, no heart, just ambition. In fact, he was a plantation negro just like most other folks in the streets. Why, because in the end he fell for the 42 fake out. His lawyer sold him a pipe dream that the deal on the table was the best anyone could get him. But it wasn't. The writer/producers/directors wouldn't let him beat the system and die with honor--given the craft he chose--in the streets like a G; a victim of the same cycle he perpetuated.
Instead he lost he crown on the old hidden ball trick and was left--like to previously mentioned punched out boxer, starting way riskier than rewarding fights on the corner with little cats Chris or ole girl would have extinguished at his command during his hayday, just to see if he still had it ... just to feel the thrill of victory one more time. Why, cause in the end, he only had one skill and the man took it from him. Not the po-po who he kept at bay, but the only man he slipped up and trusted. It's funny you missed that portion of the final season DV--uncharacteristic to say the least.
It's been raised already, but how can a character created by the system, be the posterboy for anti-plantation Negroes? Why would the man make the character you're hyping Marlo to be.
