Church uses billboard to "trash" rap music

June 19, 2007 01:20 PM

Members of a church in Chicago are using billboards to protest demeaning lyrics used in rap songs.

On Monday, St. Sabina Church put up 20 billboards across the city that target recording artists who they believe produce negative music.

The billboard reads, "Stop listening to trash," and lists ten current rappers whose lyrics they believe demean women and endorse violence.

The pastor of St. Sabina Church says the only way to end violence and disrespect towards women is to confront every form of negativity, including the music industry.

All of a sudden some "Church group" has money for billboards. LOL. GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE.

Reverend Such N. Such suddenly dips INTO HIS POCKET to put up 10 billboards, which are in turn broadcast on 10 media Networks and 10 million blogs.

Sicking Obedient Negros on less Obedient Negros. This is called supporting the "opposition party". Using one set of black people to completely discredit another set of black people.

Ever since Kanye said something after Katrina it's been Open Season on Rap.

I wonder who is really behind it... hell, pick a group!

Man, that's really messed up. To just generalize and blackwash a whole art form is wack.

church will do anything for dollars. anything.

if this will put frustrated parental butts in seats, they will do it.

IMO, church is worse than rap.

Anonymous said...

mind you, this will backfire on them.

The church is only the pawn. There's no way, as DV said, that the church is funding this campaign. There's evil in the midst.

You think those beacons of morality will put up billboards that say "stop watching trash" with still clips from Desperate Housewives and The OC?

Anonymous said...

nobody will give them money for that.

How is that generalzing... The goal clearly stated is to target artist who promote negative rap lyrics. Thats not the entire genre.

So if church is a pawn what are gansta rap corporate/commercial artist???

but should the DAMN CHURCH be trickin' itself out like that????

I mean if so, then they can't be mad at the rappers. at this point it's just old school big bank take little bank.

WTF is going on?!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Where is the proof that someone else put the church up to this? Jumping to conclusions I see is acceptable here. What if the patrons of that church funded the billboards themselves... Then what excuse would you find???

Casper,

There is little argument that the recent high profile campaign to discredit rap is at least partly conceived and financed by ... third party ... "media strategists".

Regardless of your personal opinion about some rappers, at what point do you ask why are outsiders willing to pay money to one group of blacks, to discredit another group of blacks? Why do they wish to manage black public opinion?

From Oprah, to Stanley Crouch, to now "Church" groups, any Negro with something to blame on Rap suddenly finds himself on CNN, Fox, Newsweek, Time, Blogs and Billboards.

If the church wanted to sponsor a billboard that said "STOP THE WAR" would they be all over the news?

If the "church group" sponsored a billboard that said "MUSLIMS ARE GOD'S CHILDREN TOO" would the story be all over Fox?

How about "STOP FOR PROFIT PRISONS"?

Nah ...

but...

"SNOOP PROMOTES NEGATIVITY" is a National Media event.

First of all I don't consider Fiddy, Snoop, The Game, Death Row, etc. a group of blacks. They are a select few individual capitalist.

Secondly, is the greater Jewish foundation wanted to raise billboards in the Harlem stating the negative health risk of eatig fried chicken I wouldn't care who funded the billboard... I am sure you wouldn't either.

Don't cleverly omit Master "P" and Suge Knight from the equation... Some of the biggest money makers from explicit lyrics...

OK.

And what exactly ... should be publicly blamed, via BILLBOARDS on this particular group of "capitalists"?

They are not targeting specific people/rappers. They are targeting negative lyrics. Now we may differ on the definition of what's negative or not but at the end of the day... You can argue for no billboards. But they have the right to argue for billboards against negative rap lyrics. There is no one stopping you and other supporters of negative rap lyrics from erecting your pro gansta rap lyric billboards my friend. Freedom of speech! I don't see this issue as blacks hating on blacks. I see it as concerned citizens trying to take their communities back from Interscope for distributing non productive influences to all young people.

LOL. That's funny. Big J sent me this story via email.

His take was "Sambos Targeted".

The funny thing is, if anyone in this story is a "Sambo" it's the Reverend Calvin Hicks Jr. wearing a lime green suit from Cavalier and a pair of matching Stacy Adams as he is handed a check from "Ira Mahlman" to blame rap.

This handkerchief head Plantation Negro couldn't spell billboard last week, now he is an advertising mogul.

trying to take them back and then do what with them? because they are not, by and large, educating them, helping to cultivate good physical (or spiritual) health, helping them raise their children, telling the truth about about any number of things that would really free people as opposed to this pseudo freedom they are promoting at 10% a pop every sunday.

People need to start the process at sometime, someplace. If slaves never took a stand against being slaves then where would we be. Secondly, I don't think that the underserved need to have someone to rap to them about how underserved they are. They need real answers... Solutions... Leadership... Not a wealthy black men rapping about the size of his woman's ass and how she drops it and pops it. But maybe you think differently? Last, just like there are bad rappers there are bad clergy... Thinkers will avoid the pitfalls of either And caring thinkers will lead those who are not as fortunate.

Ok, if this is the case, why not equal disdain for the bad clergy who rob the community?

I feel both sides of this conversation and definitely feel what you have to say Casper...

My take is that it is definitely a not so cleverly disguised bait and switch...it is like trying to treat the systems instead of treating the cause of the illness. Rap did not start black on black violence, disrespect of women, and illiteracy...rap is merely a mirror of that.

It is definitely much easier to blame Nas( who blames Nas as being a purveyor of black negativity ?? GTHOH!!) and Half Dollar for the ills of our community than to actually take a look in the mirror and recognize that as a greater community we have fallen short.

We have succumbed to:
Absentee Fathers
Not prioritizing education for our sons and daughters
Having an individualistic 'I'm out for me' mentality
Lack of spirituality and respect for others
Glorification of the images of wealth instead of respecting the path to true wealth.

Rap didn't start it...and getting rid of a b%tch or a ho in some lyrics is not going to change that...

There are some serious church haters on here! Why is it so hard to stick to the topic!!? I know, I know...every pastor is a crook...pasta dollar should be called Pastor Navigator...all ministers are selling God to make a quick buck and are sellin out their people for the cheese...I'm a deaf, dumb and blind follower of the church...wateva..
as DV would say:
yada yada...yawn...

isn't this post about the church?

was i off topic?

Anonymous said...

The topic is members of A church blaming the ills of society on hip hop...

The topic is not blaming the ills of society on THE church...

As we know neither categorization is absolute...so why go there?

True cigerettes didn't start cancer... they escalated the amount of folks who are affected each year though. See that argument is old. Its a cop out. Admit is you love to hear rappers cursing up a storm... or rapping about nonsense. You are not the person who we are concerned or worried about. It's the young minds who can not discern the difference between fact, fiction, moral or maybe the value of life. Whats more important ...Saving a life or listening to garbage. Oh by the way the mirror you speak of is controlled by corporations who conntrol and manipulate the message for profit! How many uplifting rap songs do you hear? versus Straight to the Bank rap. Or Gin and Juice rap. You do the math...

Casper,
Realistically I have to contemplate it and say that when I was growing up I LOVVVVEEEED NWA AND ICE CUBE. Loved them...listened to Ice Cube Amerikkkas most Wanted until the damn tape exploded! As an adult, now I listen to that same CD and marvel at all of the stuff he was saying and think about if I would allow my child to listen to that...and unbelieveably my answer is yes! The music, the commentary, the message was valuable...and though a lot of what he said wasn't about the life I led, it gave me insight into ghetto life. Probably the reason that it didn't have a negative impact on me was because I had parents who taught me right from wrong and good from bad...I had enough sense to look at it as entertainment and believe it or not I think a lot of kids do as well.

Are some kids (and adults) not bright enough to decipher fact from fiction...oh ya most def...but should we silence this creative and expressive genre because parents are not raising their kids with enough sense to know the difference? Hell to the naw!

It starts at home dude...but like I said its much easier to blame Fitty and dem...

No disrespect...but when is the last time you looked at the US census. Family life is not the same. Schools are not the same. Hell rap is not the same. Camparing your childhood to current life is doing yourself and your people a potential dis service. The game had changed. Capitalist contunie to thinsk of new ways. Rotary phones aint hip no more.... Dont sell no more... Although you may think they are s till useful. You grew up when jails were run ny states... Now they are run by corporations. Roads where run by states. Now Hedge funds purchase them from cities needing cash. Rap used to be for fun... Kids in the hood told there real stories. Now Univeral Music Group looks for profits... Screw art ... Show me the money... Don't get lost in the sauce

Casper,

You sound like the director's cut of Brown Sugar.

All this "what Rap used to be" nonsense.

Soteria,

You make a much needed point. It has been fashionable among the educated class to disparage the church for sometime. If they are not blaming rap, they are blaming religion.

The intellectually lazy love easy one size fits all scapegoats to blame for everything.

They fail to realize the trendy, self-righteous secularism they peddle is as much a religion as is Jehova's Witnesses. Complete with dogma, myth and High Priests, Secularism is as intolerant of competing world views as is radical Islam or Zionism.

Anything that has women fanatically defending their "right" to destroy the life within their own womb - IS A RELIGION. It is just not a Godly one.

All this "what Rap used to be" nonsense

So are you suggesting that rap/hiphop is better overall as a genre/industry? and if so why??

Denmark Vesey said...

Casper,

I am suggesting that Rap hasn't changed as much as you have.

You have grown up.

You are not supposed to like rap at 29 the way you did at 16. If you did, there would be something wrong with you.

I can barely listen to Hip Hop radio in the car. Occasionally I'll catch R. Kelly's "Flirt" and my daughter will say "Turn It Up Daddy!", and we will bump that.

However, unlike you, I don't attack the entire genre because my tastes have matured.

The fact is if De La Soul or Tribe or Keith Murray dropped today they would be duds.

Rap has been there done that.

Your little premise that "rap is controlled by a roomful of Jews" is insulting to smart young black people everywhere who are not as dumb and one-dimensional as you Rap Hating do-gooders like to pretend.

Bullshit. For the 176th time.

Who is the arbiter of this "degrading negative rap"?

You?
Anon?
Casper?
Abe Foxman?
Da Guv A Mint?
Massa?

Casper, the problem with ya'll Rap Haters, (Except for "Back N The Day" rap yada yada yawn) is that you are duplicitous and arrogantly ignorant.

NWA and Tupac were cool for you but 50 Cent and Young Joc are as bad for black people as was Jim Crow.

GTFOH

You don't like these new cats for personal reasons (player hating jealousy) and you come up with all of this Pyscho-babble Concern for Society bullshit while you lay a disproportionate amount of blame at the feet of "rappers".

DV
Who is the arbiter of this "degrading negative rap"?

DV very simple... YES! me and whom ever else takes offense to it. That's the beauty of a democracy. So you can rant, rave, scream, call people names all you want to. But last I look your not GOD. Your not perfect. You could have this one totally wrong. Think about it son;)

BTW with your logic... Who determined that having sex with a woman against her will is wrong... It's called moral standards. Critical thinking. Caring for society and not just your love of gansta lyrics that are being pumped to kids by Universal/Interscope. What's more important to you DV... your IPOD collection or the welfare of kids leaving school to stand on the corner...Cause they going "straight to the bank"!

Additionally, it is funny how you resort to calling people haters because THEY DON'T CONDONE GANSTA LYRICS ONLY. It reminds me of your president Bushy telling Americans that if your not for the war your hating on the troops.

GTFOOH!
