The Denmark Vesey Award - I'm Almost As Impressed With This Man As I Am With Myself

  2. Nicki, in my opinion Stokely &'em were developing the attitude for rap culture. They had bravado and carried the signs.

    "Guys wanted to beat him
    Girls wanted to greet him
    Kids wanted to be him
When they saw him in the coliseum"

He might as well had James Jamerson and Benny Benjamin on stage with him when he explained that the Civil Rights Bill was for white people not him; that he already knew he was a human being but as some white people needed that concept written on paper or in the form of a document to understand.

That's the attitude and delivery of a lyricist.

"I got a gold nameplate that says, 'I Wish U Would!'"

  3. And yet the real dilemma is that the black man and his historically evolved provocative ways are increasingly futile amongst a deracinated mass of white self-annihilators. For a lot of those radically autonomous-type blacks this means savagely murdering the closest white zombie without any regard for the blood on your hands. You are just a facilitator in a white person's desire for self-annihilation. Justified. Rationalized. And ALWAYS bolstered at the back end by the history of slavery and racism.

So it isn't so much, "I wish you would" as it is, "I wish I could and I can."

    ReplyDelete
  4. TD, are you saying what I think you're saying?

    ReplyDelete
  5. I'm saying that the modern black man as opposed to that old antiquated black man is in no need to provoke. To even attempt to provoke a dead white zombie walking is futile. The radically autonomous black male can simply kill the white zombie and be justified.

No more, "I wish you would [provoke me so I can bust that white azz]."

Now it's, "You're already dead, so I can savagely kill you."

  6. GeeChee,

You have to understand the basic premise.

American black man will "liberate" from "white Supremacy" by any means necessary.

Absent this fundamental psychology, an "American black man" does not really exist.

An "American black man" who is indifferent or ignorant to the idea that he must "liberate" from "white Supremacy" is not an American black man in any recognizable fashion FROM whatever perspective one has.

    He is a SELF-annihilator.

He is detached from a collective "experience" that forged a particular collective identity. He is alienated in all manners.

    Radically autonomous.

  8. Gee - as you pointed out "he already knew he was a human being" - something which Blacks of Carribean descent have always shown the world by producing greatness such as:
    Kwame Ture
    Marcus Garvey
    Toussaint L'Ouverture
    Malcolm X
    Denmark Vesey
    Frantz Fanon
    Ivan Van Sertima
and the world's only successful slave revolt - HAITI!

  9. I was just teas'n TD. I actually had no idea what you were saying. But you did bring me two posts closer to your point.

What I'm saying is LL Cool J's rhyme is customized on Stokely's mugshot nameplate.

LL is not my all time favorite rapper

Stokely is not my all time favorite activist.

I should not have to spell that out but I'm putting the art in slow mo' for now.

Artistically, the mugshot and the lyrics come together; their form intersects; they share a common aesthetic.

This TD is the evolution of an aesthetic. When you sum up all of your "self-annihilators" and "radical autonomators" into a rhyme loaded with bravado, style, attitude and confidence, where do you think all of that evolved from?

Edgar Allan Poe, Emily Dickinson, William Shakespeare, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow?

    or

some Stokely shades, Run DMC laceless Adidas & dookie gold ropes, a Black Panther leather jacket, a James Brown hook, a James Cagney soundbite, an Ali pre-fight poem, a Detroit Red mugshot?

    Where?

Biz Markie once single-handedly defeated an entire crew of MC's in a freestyle battle just by doing the Biz dance. They couldn't respond. He evolved the art in the mid-battle.

Does that make sense? Aesthetically, artistically, yes.

Stokely/ LL...that's why they make sense. That's what my 1st post abbreviated.

    ReplyDelete
  10. GeeChee,

    Neither...

Since all those contemporary cats you reference are/were into the "art of liberation" then their "artistic displays" are ALWAYS up for radical re-interpretation.

    You're an artist.

But you are not a Supremacist.

You don't and won't make art that transcends the worldly.

So what kind of "art" does an anti-Supremacist make?

He makes "art" that is susceptible to a "truthful" interpretation which may lie completely external to his intent.

You had to explain to me some of the background story for this piece of digital "art" that I was not aware of. My interpretation did not regard these details of the production one bit. And yet, your inquiry suggests that it should.

You're trying to have your cake and eat it, too.

I should understand the underlying details of this "digital art" production before making an interpretation.

But really, only a truthful interpretation DEFINES real art.

That piece up there in the context of America is a piece of "black" liberationist propaganda FROM THE THROWBACK.

Who is this supposed to bite?

    Is propaganda, art?

So actually, in my interpretation, you're asking me to be like Shakespeare and Longfellow instead of Stokely and LL Cool J.

    ReplyDelete
  11. See GeeChee,

You put out this piece with an underlying structure that only you are completely aware of. You have intent to reach a certain interpretation, but at the same time and because you are working from a "liberationist" perspective, you create a puzzle of images that has your onlookers questioning. Analyzing. Interpreting.

Of course, because your "art" is so "open" it is susceptible to a particular interpretation that MAY LEAVE lasting impression. This interpretation may be that one "truthful" interpretation that defines your "art" in a manner entirely antithetical to your intent.

One of the defining features of the "liberated artist" is his penchant for leaving the spectators completely puzzled.

My interpretation looks to solve these puzzles.

    ReplyDelete
  12. GeeChee,

You have a humble internet personality to contrast with my "bravado" and "attitude," but you are still the liberated artist, an entity of which humility does not come to mind.

    I speak out against SELF-annihilation.

There is not a foundation of "bravado" and "attitude" from whence this message springs forth.

It's just simple truth. Articulated in simple words. Fashioned in simple sentences. That rhyme.

    Radical liberationists are SELF-annihilators.

    "Black" liberationists are SELF-annihilators.

    "White" liberationists are SELF-annihilators.

    Each facilitates the other's SELF-annihilation.

There just are no black Supremacists on the scene. The liberation from "white supremacy" is too absolutely ingrained in the American black man's psyche. It has reached global memetic status such that a non-American black man creates American black man propaganda. This becomes a reinforcing mechanism. The pressure to maintain this encapsulating memetic paradigm is aggressively and increasingly palpable to the adherent.

Only the white Supremacist can save us ALL from this descent, but he is a rare and dying breed and the "black" liberationist has prideful blood on his hands.

But whether it is a fact about the book or a fact about the world that you have learned, you have gained nothing but information if you have exercised only your memory. You have not been enlightened. Enlightenment is achieved only when, in addition to knowing what an author says, you know what he means and why he says it."

  17. Never said I understood, only that I was brought two posts closer.

All the "art that I don't and won't make," and "can't eat a cake" that I created the recipe for...then thinking it was a radical chocolate autonomy upside down cake when the ingredients suggest otherwise...I thought, I'm trying to coach someone into reading charged imagery when they wouldn't know art if their name was Garfunkel and worked at MoMA.

  21. Come on GeeChee,

I read your "charged imagery" and let you know how outdated it is...

LL Cool J is at least 20 years off the scene and Carmichael??? Who? Some psuedo-American that swallowed the meme whole?

    Start here my brother...

The American Black Man will "liberate" from "white supremacy" by any means necessary.

The identity is forged. The meme is universal. All-encompassing.

The only question is where that American black man stands in the continuum?

Your "art" is a throwback to an "American black man" from the past.

The black flash mob isn't being arrested and saying, "I wish you would."

    Nah man...

The radical "black" liberationist is free as a jungle cat roaring, "I wish I could and I can."

Update that "charged imagery" to reflect REAL TIME.

    That would be bold.

In the meantime, your "art" is just a reflection of your stunted "progression" and ultimate liberation.

Get it? Nope... The radically autonomous just pretend to not get it.

Dudes are on the detach. But then they're not.

  34. Don’t let your thermometer boil over TD.

    Look…

This is what white art critics tend to do to black artists sometimes. Because you’re a black artist your art will inherently speak about racism, politics, slavery or the hardships of growing up and struggling with your complexion. If I paint an apple, some critic somewhere would somehow find a way to reference Native Son or Invisible Man in that piece of fruit. Not knocking it but I’m saying cats like you do it all the time. That’s why I said what you’re arguing is not new…a throw back. That’s why when TD saw Stokely you damn near had a radical autonomy attack.

You can’t see the parallels, intersections, evolution of culture/ aesthetics. You don’t get the transition from jump blues to rock because you get hung up on what the politics of the blues musicians were. What matters about the piece is dark matter in your sight, that’s why it’s invisible to you.

If you want to get literal about reading this image why not reference the story behind it in which Stokely was jailed for the Freedom Rides?

According to your logic, using this 1961 Jackson, Mississippi photo would be GCV’s gesture of becoming a radical integrationist. You can’t understand how collage is the art of sampling; how rap can sample the form without being locked into the content. It’s because you are a “white literalist” on some “radical autohypnosis.”

You can’t wish away the fact that rap culture evolved out of black resistance just as it’s kinfolk, punk music evolved out of white resistance.

If you want to apply a literal interpretation to what this image is connected to, why stop with photographic art? Extend your analysis to the very rap you use in your posts.

Afrika Bambaata, the Godfather of hip hop use to hang out at Black Panther information spots. Seems as if the rap you love to use is "any means necessary... FROM.BACK.IN.THE.DAY. Maybe you're unconscious about all this? Maybe you're in a state of radical autonomy” TD. Perhaps you use black resistance rap because you have a “black liberation mindset on reset.”

You CAN wish away the historical fact that black culture IS the bell curve of oppositionality to the interpersonal evil of white abductor culture.

Black culture is a uniquely American phenomenon running the gamut of abject submission to supreme conquest mediated by the broad hump of quiet and comfortable assimilation.

They always seem capable in convincing enough Negroes that IF they do speak out - this would harm the favorable presiding power, allowing the COMMON ENEMY to return back to power - and then they'll be DEPRESSED in addition to being OPPRESSED by the government.

  38. GeeChee,

No temperature increases over here. This is meme warfare. You know this, man. I can only go so GeeChee deep over these internets.

This piece is out and subject to interpretation. That's the cost of being an artist.

My interpretation is meant to stick because your interpretation has a whole elaborate back story only privy to the artist and those he lets in.

To be truthful, I had no idea who the black man was nor did I recognize the caption as being an LL Cool J phrase. Those things were minor details in the "bigger picture."

Now, no doubt there are black artists that create things entirely unrelated to the "struggle," but that's not what you distributed here.

You distributed a charged piece that is meant to provoke the white man...

    But now you're vacillating...

Now this is really about the white man (TD) trying to create provocation in what is nothing more than art.

It doesn't matter if you knew who it was or the origin of the text.

What you were expected to be competent enough to do was to recognize that it was a mugshot of a person with a nameplate that read "I wish you would."

If you discovered 10 years later this was Stokely & 20 years after that LL's lyrics, then good for you, you are right on time for TD. Listening to "Songs in the Key of Life" again, I just got a rap lyric that was dropped back in '93. What's this drive through ready to go information source you've constructed about the world?

@Big Don: Please don't ever attempt to demonstrate. Your boy Thordaddy's efforts at rhyming have earned him a perpetual spot in the "play on your own level" hall of shame...,

@CNu: lol, you never hear anybody who avoids Chinese people just bounce up and announce he speaks Chinese. But somehow the BD gene is forever expressing itself.

  55. THESE.BLACK.CATS.WILL.NOT.ANSWER.THE.NIGEL.QUESTION!

Do you seek "liberation" from "white Supremacy" by ANY MEMES NECESSARY?

    Yes...

    or

    No...

This is not a false dichotomy.

Refusal to answer is evidence of_____?

    a. duplicity
    b. cunning
    c. indifference
    d. deception
    e. all the above

What should we call this collection of characteristics found in one individual?

  56. If cats like Cnu and GeeChee ARE NOT seeking to "liberate" from "white Supremacy" by any means necessary then why should any other black man think he had to do the same?

Why is this meme so strong and infectious BUT totally unnecessary to those that should most value its precepts?

    ReplyDelete
  57. @TD - I'm confused... In what way does "White Supremacy" affect anyone? 99.99 percent of the white people with whom I will ever come into contact will never be able to do anything to or for me - why should I be concerned with their thinking?

  58. UBJ...

    Finally, man...

White Supremacy has NOTHING to do with the black man, but almost all conscious black men have been thoroughly bamboozled into believing they have to seek liberation from it.

The general definition of a "black man" is one who seeks liberation from "white supremacy." Without the signifying obedience to this meme, the "black man" isn't really seen as a black man.

Fact is... Most black men have never even come within a million miles of a genuine white Supremacist, but he's still the boogie man that lurks everywhere and even looks like a killer Mestizo every so often.

  59. Then again...

Let's not pretend that this defining meme doesn't still have a powerful hold on millions of black and white liberals.
